Description

A drawing of another one of my favorite stuffed animals: a Webkinz toco toucan that I christened Steve.  Isn't he adorable?  I wanted to make the background a little more interesting, so I included the wrinkles and shadows on the bedcover he was sitting on, though I left out the pattern.  This picture took about 3 days to finish.

Pencils used: F, H, B, 2B, 3B, 8B, 9B

I’m going off assuming this is the plushy in question: images-na.ssl-images-amazon.co… . First thing I should do is outline some of the things you did well. You have a good attention to detail across the edges of the plushy. The fur is well defined. Your blacks don’t give off a glossy texture. I notice the subtle contrast along the body of the plushy. Looking through your gallery, I must give a lot of credit to you.
I’ve heard the phrase less is more when dealing with darker graphite. I think difference in black is done well but going down a step in (9B to 8B and 8B to 7B) might settle more proper against the lighter background. Of course, one would argue that the added attention to the plushy itself could be considered a positive thing. Something to keep in mind.

Looking further at the background, there isn’t as much to discuss given its simplicity. I might advise keeping the symmetry along the sheets towards the top and keeping the impression of the wrinkles left in the rest of the blanket. Going back to the plushy, I can see it looking nicer if the lighter spot on the back was a bit smaller, about an inch or two more of the darker part of the body. Another feature I would have liked to see is more detail on the tail itself. I see it as just a stump and not a large, pretty, three humped tail that I see as the reference I’m assuming that this is. Last thing I can see is I would suggest inverting the texture that is on the plushy’s chest with what is around the neck area. Making the neck a tad cleaner.

I wanted to give as much input as I can, given my love of both stuffed animals and toucans. You don’t get the challenges of traditional eyes and lips so there’s nothing to comment on there. I see no personal qualms with the contours. The shapes look as natural as a plushy does.
