I've been meaning to make a Dexter fan art for FOREVER so this was long overdue. Plus I am having massive withdrawals after the season finale and painting this was the only way to console myself.
Odd title is odd (matches my odd composition). I choose weird screencaps to use for reference and taken out of context it looks like he's sleep walking...so yeah, that's the real story behind the title. But if you think about it, his job + being a single dad + his "extra curricular activities" have got to be EXHAUSTING...and that's the made up story behind the title.
Painted in Photoshop 6 with a Wacom Graphire 3 pen tablet. Screencap used as reference of course. 3 hours.

Wow, I'm not huge on fan art, but this is a step above, great composition, beautifully rendered, plus Dex is our favourite show too. How the hell are they gonna handle Deb having seen him kill?!?! Oh, you might've seen that series! You guys are a fair way ahead over there, no spoilers!!!

yes, oh my god that finale was intense (even though i knew it had to happen eventually). i hate to wish my summer away but i am anxious for September when the new season starts.

Oh ok, that means we'll get it in November! My wife is betting it was a dream, or something, I don't think so! Last season was so intense we couldn’t wait, I downloaded the lsat 4 eps! We dont watch much, but Dex is too good, they keep cancelling all the other shows we like, US of Tara a prime example, clearly too clever for America! I love your idea of using screen grabs as ref, it sure dont look like it. Have you sent any of your pics to Michael C Hall? I bet he'd love them!

my guess is that Dexter will pass it off to Deb as a vengeance murder (because Travis tried to kill Harrison). she might help Dexter cover it up but then she'll be super suspicious of Dexter and eventually figure out his real secret.
i know what you mean about good shows being cancelled. 
my trick is to use odd refs in the hopes that no one else used it already. many fan artists use promo shots for their work so then you keep seeing the same image rendered over and over and over again, so even if they have amazing skill the image becomes boring, which is unfortunate.

Oh jeez, the way you paint skin tones is just--incredible, augh. I LOVE that faint suggestion of veins under his skin too--that's just the detail I can't get over at all! And all of this just done in 3 hours?!?? You're a beast! 8C

oh gawd, i have a confession...the veins under the skin is 100% accidental. it's leftover scibbles from an earlier paint layer that i neglected to colour over completely. 
also, note to self: add veins (on purpose) to next portrait.

This is so perfect, really captures his essence! i have withdrawals too, i see the last scene in my head over and over again.. and i try to figure out what could happen in the next season, but it's so far away and i'm going crazy. Does making fanart help? i shuld try too, there is so little Dexter fanart out there.

glad ya like his hair! i am super happy with how it turned out. i wasn't sure if i could pull off the gingery tones he's got hiding in there, especially in his sideburns without making his hair look too orange.
as for the composition, yeah it would be correct and it looks okay [link] but i find it less interesting, but that's just my personal taste.
