Description So, something else... My motivation to draw canines has pretty much dropped (plus I did not earn a single watcher recently so people might be as bored of canines as I can be sometimes ) but this was a good practice. Kasatka, the orca matriarch at seaworld died so here goes some art of her. She was beautiful. Rip Kasatka

Please don't complain about the watermark, this might go up for print sale and I don't want it to get stolen. (In this case it will be for sale on my etsy, not on deviantart) I listened to an old song from a hungarian music artist who died a few years ago and it inspired me to do some art... I translated some of the lyrics below.

Disclaimer: I do not own the song or lyrics, just the art and the english translation! The song belongs to László Bódi and his inheritors.

In the clouds the sun
has dressed itself in colors of blue and yellow
nobody can hurt anymore
there is no pain anymore

everybody will get here one day
everybody will be here one day
you'll find me forever
you'll lose me forever

Don't use this picture for anything without my permission, thank you.
I don't mind any comments including constructive criticism or pro/anticap comments but please be nice. I will hide heated comments as I don't want the comment field to turn into a battlefield, thanks.

I never got to meet Kasatka (I've only been to SeaWorld once back when I was five, and even then it was a park that she wasn't living at), but seeing all these tributes to her kinda makes we wish that I did. She must have really been an amazing animal.

I did not know her either - I do not support SeaWorld but I have been in Marineland Antibes as I have no opportunity to go whale watching here where I live. So I go to these parks to see these majestic animals in real life but it is so sad they have to live in such a tiny place. (Btw. at least Marineland does not rely on the orcas to make money as they have other theme parks and a hotel - so they could exist well without captive orcas and I don't feel like I am contributing to this business with my once-in-a-year trip )

Very nice!
And yes, it's always nice to draw something different. Refreshes the inspiration.

I love the colors. i could give you some tips on anatomy/markings if you like

Thanks, that would be helpful as I'm not familiar with orca anatomy and markings though I was looking at reference photos, I am still unsure about the markings.

The pect fins are too round, orca pects have a more oval-ish shape. i think the pect to the right is to 'short' and 'fat' {especially on the end} i know pects are quite hard but they are plenty of good photos you can use as a reference.

theres also a few problems with the belly. the white mark is a bit to wide, it should be slimmed down a bit.  she also lacks a belly button.
the eyes are also to far up. it should be a little more far back, right behind the cheek mark.
her head and her body don't really match.

her head should be more vertical like with the body. she also lacks an saddle patch, it should at least show a little on the back.

anyways that's my thoughts on it. sorry if i sound a bit to harsh or don't get some of my points, i'm not that good with writing critique haha ;,>

Oh, I see, I have some problems with the pectoral fins but I am more concerned with the belly markings. Could you show me a photo ref where that 'belly button' is shown? In fact I preserved the unmerged psd because I guess the belly is too bad and I have to correct it (as it is more easy to correct than the head and the fins). The saddle patch is there but I put too much lighting behind the orca and it got lost ;_; Maybe I should not have put the bright light there behind the saddle patch. So I guess I can correct the belly... I will practice drawing orcas more as I am not good at drawing specific orcas, haha. Thanks for the critique anyway, it helps me do better

Of course! www.brianorca.com/Medium/19/14…

Whales and dolphins are pretty hard animals to draw, especially with anatomy.

Thank you, it's a perfect reference photo! I will try to correct that belly. I guess I just need to practice drawing dolphins because dogs are even harder anatomy-wise and it took me years to master them. Maybe for orcas I will need some years too.

Yep, cetaceans are quite hard animals to learn. good luck with that (:

This is lovely, it's one of those pieces of art that I can't stop staring at. I like her translucent quality, how her flukes fade into the earth. R.I.P Kasatka.

I'm happy how this fade effect turned out as there was a lot of experiment in this, and I changed plans a lot so I could do that with my skills. The earth could have been better but it is not the main focus anyway.

yes, poor Kasatka but putting her down was a humane act, so she no longer suffers

It would have been more human not to keep her on a tank since day 1

LuckyStarhun In reply to LordVaderNihilus [2017-08-21 19:37:45 +0000 UTC]

That's the world we live in, I guess. Mankind won't change, I think. Since humans keep their own kind in slavery, what the heck we expect... animals are better. But don't worry since seaworld will not stay afloat for so long anyway so people should not hassle over it on forums, at least I stay out of it and don't comment on the topic, just make art and that's it

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LordVaderNihilus In reply to LuckyStarhun [2017-08-21 19:41:19 +0000 UTC]

what they should do is put themselves in tanks to feel what orcas and dolphins feel

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LuckyStarhun In reply to LordVaderNihilus [2017-08-22 07:40:28 +0000 UTC]

In fact dolphins have more empathy than humans because the part in their brain responsible for empathy is bigger... humans are not really good at that, sadly. Surely they would whine if they had to swim around in circles but that's all, humans are not considerate for other beings.

Seaworld is losing profit which is good but I'm afraid if they go bankrupt all of a sudden they will kill all their remaining orcas and there will be no chance to save them. It is better if seaworld business dies slowly as it gives time to build sanctuaries for the orcas who can retire then.
