You got a more cutesy interpretation down right, I suppose you try to make anything cuter so I really shouldn't be surprised.
Honestly, though: I didn't watch most of this show growing up. I did find myself curious about his opponent Vlad Masters later on. It's always interesting to see the good guy go up against someone more powerful than him, and the stakes were personal, so those were the episodes I went out of my way for.
It is fun to say "he's a phantom!" on cue.
