Description
LEX
Universe of origin: Universe-3
Real name: Alexander Luthor
Group affiliation: Legion of Justice
Backstory: Genius, billionaire, philanthropist, a superhero wearing a hi-tech armor. This is Alexander “Alex” Luthor, head of the company Luthorcorp and arch-nemesis of the Kryptonian supervillain Ultraman.
He lost his younger sister Lena and their father Lionel in a wildfire that started naturally, but was intensified by Ultraman’s actions. Since then, he was raised by his mother, Lillian Luthor. This loss was the beginning of his grudge against Ultraman and, by extension, the latter’s team Crime Syndicate. Using the technological resources of his company, he built a hi-tech armor for himself and adopted the codename Lex, which means Law, in Latin (it was his intent, not a nickname of his name: he wanted to be the law to oppose the Crime Syndicate's villainy).
He fell in love with Italian Countess (or Contessa) Erica Alessandra Della Portenza, a mechanical engineer that Luthorcorp associated with. Erica also wore an armor, adopting the codename Powerhouse. They contacted other heroes and founded the superhero team known as Legion of Justice.
Lex and Erica had a daughter, named Alexis. Unfortunately, Erica died in a fight against the alien invader Orion the Hunter when Alexis was 3 years old. In an upgrade of his armor, he added an Artificial Intelligence to it, which he called “Countess”, in honor to his deceased wife.
After one year dealing with his bereavement, Alexander fell in love again: this time with his teammate Vera Dox a.k.a. Cerebra, an alien from the planet Colu. They eventually married and had a green-skinned daughter together, named Lena, after Alexander’s deceased sister. Lena is 5 years and 4 months younger than Alexis.
When the Legion of Justice visited U-0 to defeat the Crime Syndicate, Lex was disappointed when he was told that his U-0 counterpart was evil (he never met his U-0 version), but had some relief when he learned that Ultraman’s counterpart Superman was a good person, and also that the counterpart of his sister Lena is alive and a good person, too. U-0 Superman and Lena, on their turn, were also glad to see a good Lex.
Notes: His initial description was borrowed from a line that Iron Man (Tony Stark) says to Captain America in the MCU’s film The Avengers. Having Erica wearing armor is a nod to Tony’s girlfriend Pepper wearing the Rescue armor in Iron Man’s comics.
Talking about Erica, her name, originally Erica Alexandra del Portenza, was changed to sound more Italian-like, Erica Alessandra della Portenza: the letter X is rare in Italian names, so Alessandra would be more accurate to that language than Alexandra; also, Portenza sounds like a feminine word, so the preposition should be della instead of del.
Lex’s look is a mix of different versions: his beard and the L in the chest emblem were taken from the pre-Crisis Earth-3 version; the golden parts were taken from the good Lex of the animation Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths; and the overall design is from the armor of his evil mainstream version. His team name Legion of Justice is a reference to the Legion of Doom, from the Superfriends cartoon and some more recent comics.
The name of his first daughter, Alexis, was borrowed from a character of the Legion of Super-Heroes animated series (whose connection to Lex isn't specified). The name of his second daughter, Lena, was borrowed from his daughter in the post-Crisis continuity, in which her mother was Erica. In these comics, baby Lena was used as a host for Brainiac I and given to Brainiac 13, being aged up and having her skin turned green (she was later reverted to her normal baby-self). It was referenced here changing her mother from Erica to a female version of Brainiac (Cerebra/ Vera Dox).
