Description CHUEHING OVER KOZIK
11" x 14"
Acrylic + Ink
2007

NOTES: A long time ago, back when I was still in college, I created a small series of paintings entitled "Paintings for Children". Inspired by the "Joe Camel", Camel cigarettes, controversy, the paintings were simple animal creatures smoking cigarettes and drinking booze. The images were designed to attract the attention of children. One of those paintings was of a bunny smoking. When I browsed through the comment book after the opening, someone noted that Frank Kozik had already created a smoking rabbit. I felt that the comment was suggesting that I was a biter. However, at the time, I hadn't seen the image, but upon reading the note, I did some research and saw the image that they were refering to. Needless to say, the comment kinda got under my skin.
Since then, I've become recognized for my paintings of bears and rabbits, and Kozik has become an active contributor to the art toy phenomenon. A phenomenon many people would also lump me in with. This painting illustrates my apathy toward the art toy scene, and has personal refrences to the smoking bunny thing.

NOTE: This painting was featured in my "My Funny Little Tragedy" show, hosted by M Modern Gallery [link]

I remember someone who pointed out to me that they sorta had seen my sort of stuff before somewhere. Ended with a really weird comparison with Matt Groenings figures.

anyone who is a fan of the "art" of kozik, needs to go do an image search on 50's animator Preston Blair. NOW.

I have to say your paintings have never reminded me closely of Kozik's stuff, and I like both. Your work has always stood out to me as different from most other stuff I've seen. Keep it up!

Excellent piece, as usual. The biting i can understand. My art usually fits in the "street art" genre, and that is a category that has literally been beaten to death by biters and the like, while it thrives on originality and ingenuity. Coming up with an original style in street art is an art of its own. I wouldn't even consider something like your situation biting at all, especially considering you had never seen the original piece referred to.
