Description
These guys are all over around my place. As I live in the "wetlands" they thrive and are always around the ponds and little creeks (if you can call them creeks) around my place. I can hear their songs (the Red-winged Blackbird) and their squawking (the Yellow-headed Blackbird) all day long at my place. I've slowly been able to help all the birds in this area. So you could say I have my own little bird sanctuary
Here are some facts;
The Yellow-headed Blackbird often nests in the same marsh as the Red-winged Blackbird. The larger Yellow-headed Blackbird is dominant to the Red-winged Blackbird, and displaces the smaller blackbird from the prime nesting spots. The Yellow-headed Blackbird is strongly aggressive toward Marsh Wrens, probably because of the egg-destroying habits of the wrens. When the Yellow-headed Blackbird finishes breeding and leaves, Marsh Wrens expand into former blackbird territories.
The males may attract up to eight females to nest within his area. The male helps feed nestlings, but usually only in the first nest established in his territory.
Yellow-headed blackbirds live in Western Canada and the United States in marshy areas. In Canada and the Northern US, they migrate south during winter.
Diet consists of insects and seeds. Their marshy habitat has an abundance of insect life. They also will come to bird feeders as well.
