i'm glad i could get to finishing this quicker then my last art trade with you, miiu-
it's always a pleasure doing art trades with you uwu
i hope you like how this turned out

hands are something that i am trying to improve on, so trying to incoporate more of them into my drawings - so yep just be aware that i know my fault in drawing hands so please don't bother commenting about it ;v;

First I'd like to say your character is absolutely cute and very well drawn!

And while I love winged people, my main issue is in fact his wings.  They appear to be placed almost as an afterthought; in other words, they don't quite fit with the rest of him.  A couple things to think about as regards winged people:

* colour of feathers --- his feathers all appear to be basically white (or very light green), while his hair is purple!  Hair & feather colours would look much better, and his wings would look much more natural I think if they matched better, or at least complimented one another.  In other words, he should also have some white hair; or she should have predominantly purple feathers.  I do like how the wingtips are darker: contrasting purple and white that way could work.
* clothing --- Tsuyoshi is wearing a buttoned down shirt, a pea coat and a cape.  These kinds of clothing styles are really unrealistic when combined with wings.  I know a lot of artists just draw wings on the back of a character's jacket or shirt; but it does look quite odd.  I mean: how does he put on or take off a shirt, a coat and a cape with his wings!?

(PS: Corrected character name, etc.)

ah, i mean, i wasn't the one who designed the character? i just chose to draw him while doing a art trade with the artist miiu. the character's name is tsuyoshi, and honestly i really like the character design personally. as much as i appreciate your critique, i really don't believe if it's applicable to me.

(ah, yes, you did, i just ended up hiding it considering i really didn't believe your critique could be considered constructive critism torwards me, since nothing can apply)

Ah, I see.  Well, you may not have designed him, but you are the artist who drew him!  (Just like very many artists on dA.) And even if he's not your character, the critique is offered as a general, constructive criticism that could apply to your future endeavours, for example, should you ever wish to draw your own winged character! My critique was directed at your work, not the original character's artist!

Hiding my critique was probably not the best response, but I think it's fair to explain the situation, and I appreciate that.

yes, i did in fact draw this piece.. but, i personally felt your critique too specific torwards this character, considering your comment was pratically entirely about the character's design. i would have felt honestly way more comfortable if you gave critism on how i didn't shade something, or add enough texture to the fabric he's wearing. it just feels pretty awkward if you give your opinion on a character (that i personally love) but isn't mine. you also really never mentioned on your first comment what you just said (about how this could had been for general criticism), if you did, that probably would have helped a lot.

i appreciate you giving your time to give me your comment and opinion on this piece though. i'm extremely sorry if i come off as rude, with my response.

(well..i just followed along with what was a given note while submitting to the group.. " You are free to disagree with a comment, but please do not attack the commenter, who spent their time trying to help. Simply hide the comment or thank the commenter for their time and move on."

(Updated comment based on our discussion.)

Okay, well, I'll just clarify by reiterating that my critique is not of the character or it's design by the original designer so much as your rendition of it. In other words, this particular piece of art!

Well, I don't actually have a problem as regards shading or lack of shading or any of those other things. As I said originally, and stand by it, you drew this character very well indeed!

Honestly, I don't understand why you felt and continue to feel awkward. It's your art! You did a good job and you should be justifiably proud! I also don't understand why you feel I should have explicitly stated that I offered a general, constructive criticism. That's what Project Comment is all about! You are a member of that group and submitted your work to be featured for members to offer constructive criticism. I did, however, say "A couple things to think about as regards winged people:" which is rather explicitly indicative of generalities (this image included, but any others you may draw).

I'm happy though that you have not hidden my comment this time, and that you've allowed us the chance to discuss the issue! Open communication is better than hiding behind, well, a hidden comment!

And I'll leave it at that then.

Hello I'm from

This is really a nice painting, the character looks really detailed, especially the clothing and the hat has a lot of layeres and folds and cute little details which make the character more believable. The skin and shading of it is also well done and I think it's cute that she has slighly red cheeks. The shading and highlighting of the clothing is mostly well done but it's a bit hard to tell that the left (from viewers side) arm is tugged under the larger jacket so I would probably darken the arm that is underneath. Otherwise it's a bit hard to tell and a closer look is necessary.

Then there seem to be some slight perspective issues with the right wing and arm. I'm not good at foreshortening myself so I just thing the arm should be a bit longer and the wing has slightly a wrong angle to be completely believable that way. But I think it's not obviously wrong . And I'm sorry I can't give you a better advise on how to fix it. It's just a feeling that something is wrong .

The next thing I noticed is that the Hand could be slighly too short, but only a tiny bit . Also I'm not really sure what her expression should tell the viewer. She looks a bit sad although she is smiling

What also disturbs a bit is the backgroung I think. It just doesn't fit the whole concept. The character would look better in an environment that is not composed out of geometrical shapes but should look more natural. But of course that's only my humble opinion and what counts is that you are satisfied with it .

Lastly I would like to give you the tip to use more textures for painting things like hair or feathers. It would make them look more believable and will really freshen up your image a lot if you use it correctly and with a bit of practise.

All in all I really hope my advices can help you a bit and please don't be discouraged. I still think your painting is at a very high level. And it's always easier to point things out than to try and improve them, so please keep on doing such wonderful art . I'm looking forward to seeing you improve

just gonna go and throw in here that the character i drew was male--  I will definitely try to incorporate more textures into my feathers, if i'm not worn out my lining them of course. also about the wings: but the left wing is meant to be outstretched, the right one is folded, since wings can do that. although i feel like i could've have added more shading to convey that. and about the hand, i appreciate your critism about that, but I have alreadly made a note in my description notifiying viewers that I do know my fault in drawing them ;v;

i'll keep your advise in mind when i draw something similar. Thank you so much for taking time out of your day to give me such an informative critism. I hope my reply dosen't come off as rude, since i was slightly vexed about the misused pronouns while reading your amazing critique.

Hey you're welcome and don't worry it's not rude to me . I most apologize that I thought it was a girl, now that you say it it makes sense that it is a man . I also see now that the wing is actually folded . It was misinterpreted

aha, i really have to congratulate you on mentioning to pick out these details that i kinda personally have issues with.
mentioning the expression i something i really want to improve on. So if you could provide references, that would just be fantastic!

I'm sure you will get over those issues if you practise hard and often .

well I don't have any experience with your particular style. I draw more semi-realsitic but I would advice you to sketch regularly and try and search expressions on the internet .

If you are on instagram I love this account providing lots of different references:

Hello! Found this through ProjectComment .

This is such a charming and polished drawing, and you have a lovely style. Surrounding the character in green tones was a great choice for directing the eye to the character’s face and hair, which are different colors from everything else. Speaking of the face, the features and expression are adorable and well-proportioned. You seem to have a good understanding of lighting and shadow placement as well.

The wings are so well drawn and detailed, it really shows you put a lot of time and focus into drawing each feather. It’s a nice detail that they seem to expand outside of the background. I like that you added an abstract/pattern background to compliment the colors in the piece while the white outline around the character helps him stand out.

The clothing is nicely detailed as well but I can’t help noticing that the garment that has the belt over it doesn’t seem to be affected by it. When a piece of fabric is compressed by something like a belt, it creates wrinkles. The lack of that doesn’t take away from this piece in my opinion, but it could be something to pay attention to in future drawings.

It’s great that you’re self-critical and aware of the hands needing work, but you should also recognize all you’re doing a great job with. I hope you’ll keep practicing drawing hands, and continue to make charming, detailed art like this!
