About Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is a type of cancer originating from breast tissue, most commonly from the inner lining of milk ducts or the lobules that supply the ducts with milk. Cancers originating from ducts are known as ductal carcinomas, while those originating from lobules are known as lobular carcinomas. Breast cancer occurs in humans and other mammals. While the overwhelming majority of human cases occur in women, male breast cancer can also occur.

The size, stage, rate of growth, and other characteristics of a breast cancer determine the kinds of treatment. Treatment may include surgery, drugs (hormonal therapy and chemotherapy), radiation and/or immunotherapy. Surgical removal of the tumor provides the single largest benefit, with surgery alone curing many cases. To increase the likelihood of cure, several chemotherapy regimens are commonly given in addition to surgery. Radiation is used after breast-conserving surgery and substantially improves local relapse rates and in many circumstances also overall survival. Some breast cancers are sensitive to hormones such as estrogen and/or progesterone, which makes it possible to treat them by blocking the effects of these hormones.

Worldwide, breast cancer accounts for 22.9% of all cancers (excluding non-melanoma skin cancers) in women. In 2008, breast cancer caused 458,503 deaths worldwide (13.7% of cancer deaths in women). Breast cancer is more than 100 times more common in women than in men, although men tend to have poorer outcomes due to delays in diagnosis.

Prognosis and survival rates for breast cancer vary greatly depending on the cancer type, stage, treatment, and geographical location of the patient. Survival rates in the Western world are high; for example, more than 8 out of 10 women (84%) in England diagnosed with breast cancer survive for at least 5 years. In developing countries, however, survival rates are much poorer.

This picture's... just great! Well done, Simone!

She may have become evil as we know her but it's quite grateful to know she really takes care of herself. Like you said, it's important to not only know about BC.. we shall prevent it from the very first hint.

In my case, since I've already reached a risque age (um, 18) have started with self-examination and keep on doing more exercise. Um, have some issues with the oil coming from nuts since I tend to develop small acne buds and with sweating they can sometimes appear on my chest. And, after gtting struck with chicken pox there are a few permanent nod-like scars where the right one connects with my armpit. *feels a little anxious* I hope they're just that. Scars...

My aunt had been diagnosed with Breast Cancer last November, and we happened to find out just after her treatment was over. I couldn't help but fave this because 1.) I must spread the issue after seeing what it had done to her, and 2.) I love the Ice Queen

This is a beautiful piece, I love the innocence you portrayed in her expression Otherwise normally people would often mistake this for being pornographic

I'm young, and already have problems likely to lead to breast cancer. I found out a few years ago that I have polycystic breasts, meaning that my breasts are full of cysts. Hormones effect the cysts as well. Since they do not pose a threat to me currently, there is no problem. However, if they contuinue to multiply as they have, or become cancerous, there will be issues. Most cancers run within my immediate family.

lol Not to me, no. XD It's all right for now, so I do not worry. It's one of those situations where only time can tell, so I choose not to dread a future that may be years from now or may not even happen.
It does give me a new perspective on these things. At first, I was uninvolved, then many people in my family died, and now I'm likely to get it too. It's an interesting view to have-- not quite there, but not quite free of it either. It's interesting. Like... I used to see, say, my grandmother's face in images like this, and now i can also put myself in that position with a sense of wonder. Not fear though.

I am not too worried. I've lived so far this way just fine despite a ittle bit of pain now and then, but there's ways to relieve that as well like a warm damp rag and birth control since it balances hormones. Now, it is not really a problem. I will worry if and when it is.
