Description Oh my Lord, was this hard work!

So.... this needs an explanation very much so. Because, no, we did not lock four blue pernese dragons in a closet. That would be one HUGE closet. For while Blues are the second smallest dragon size they still average between 25 and 29 meters in length.

No, four Blue RIDERS got locked in a closet... starting with B'ky and A'di (whose dragons are Avideth and Dalasith (left most pale blue and top most pale blue) respectively) and then A'mar (Caldoth, dark blue on right) and my character A'deo (Xaventh, bright blue at center) who was drunk.

And since I'm still learning people and am better at dragons I decided to draw all four of them, as their dragons, in the closet just before they're rescued by greenrider K'shan. Now... A'mar's sister (NPC) was present at the time but for simplicity's sake she isn't featured.

So yeah, four blues in a closet. And this was tough because of perspective, dingy coloring, geometric shapes (I hate geometric shapes) composition of dragony figures, expressions, AND I was doing four different dragon colorations in mostly colored pencil.

So yeah, cropped from the original because I'm crap at geometric spaces, but I like that better now that I did it.

Watercolor and colored pencil on Bristol (oh Bristol, how you hate me so, I'm sure)

Dragons are, again:

light blue left: Avideth (B'ky)
light blue top: Dalasith (A'di)
bright blue center: Xaventh (A'deo/me!)
dark blue right: Caldoth (A'mar)

All of PernWorld's Fort Weyr.

This image and it's scene are brought to you by the makers of Pevent. Pevent: An Adventure Every Time.

Hehe, yeah they're kinda filtered in the books in places. The first one that Todd McCaffrey did had one featured pretty well but yeah, this was us goofing off on our RPG >.> hehe

Hehe! Yeah, he was fun to do... but challenging. Luckily I had a giant chunk of Sodalite in front of me to pattern him off of. >.< Technically Xaventh (the bright blue) should have some flecks in his lighter tones but I sorta... forgot. heh... and he's my draggie too... that's a bit sad.

Oh my stars and shells this is funny! The Dragons are awesome, though though I don't think Pernese Dragons have pupils.

Haha. Almost makes me wish I could be a closet bluerider.

Almost.

lunatteo In reply to SerjaDaeva [2009-10-20 14:12:44 +0000 UTC]

those aren't pupils... have you ever looked at a praying mantis's eyes? They have a small speck in their facetted eye that follows the watcher... I did that here so there was a focal point to follow for expression. If you look at the rest of my dragons you will notice that I am well aware of the no pupil rule.

Can't say that I have looked at a praying mantis' eyes, but now I'm curious. The effect certainly does work well for the shot though.

As complicated as it may have been figuring out how to squeeze those poor blue boys in the closet it came out amazing! I love the color shading you use on them. It looks so smooth I almost thought you had done it digitally.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

lunatteo In reply to LuckyDrakes [2009-10-20 14:17:50 +0000 UTC]

Hehe, thanks! Yeah that smoothness would be the lovely effect of the prismacolor pencils applied heavily. They become almost a waxy oily pastel which is sometimes really hard to work with >.< but the effect was exactly what I wanted as my digital skill isn't that great yet. >.>

LuckyDrakes In reply to lunatteo [2009-10-23 01:05:50 +0000 UTC]

I have Farber-Castelle watercolor pencils I haven't dabbled in for a while now since I started drawing digitally. I'll have to give the Prismas a try one of these day. I love the way the hide patterns come out in your drawings. One of these days I'd love to get even close to your skills there.

If it helps any with digital try just smoothing out and blurring your sketches. That's where I started and it all kind of snowballs from there. I really only use GIMP and pretty much teach myself with help from tutorials. If you ever need help with basics just let me know.

lunatteo In reply to LuckyDrakes [2009-10-29 21:34:35 +0000 UTC]

Watercolor pencils are tough stuff to use unless you do infact used watercolor (or you want that gravelly texture on the paper). The prismas, being oily, don't have that... but they get sticky and hard to work with in each other (almost like bad oil pastels or crayons) so that's why a base with either the watercolor or a less waxy pencil (crayola, prang, derwent) works really well.

You know... I used to do the smoothing of traditional color in digital and I just haven't played much with digital since I was much younger. I did some digital photo manips for characters which I -might- post in scraps in the future... but yeah. I just got lazy with digital.

LuckyDrakes In reply to lunatteo [2009-10-31 02:17:15 +0000 UTC]

Though I haven't used them in a while I like the watercolor pencils. My fiance bought special paper for them so once it's wet the paper holds stiff though the texture is a pain because you get dark spots from pressing too hard in areas. I learned a cool trick from my mom to put rubber cement in areas you want to keep clean from stains and color then rub it off later.

I'll have to give it a try with some waxy pencils one of these days. LOL It's just a matter of buying supplies. Since there's no real do over with traditional art I get kinda frustrated easily.

I've been using GIMP a long time now. My line art comes out a lot smoother and blending hide patterns is much easier. Now trying to add dragons to pictures of real people for reference sheets is hard to do. I'm still trying to make them look less cartoonish. It might get easier if I eventually take the time to learn how to draw people but for now I'll keep up the way i have been.

I guess I'm the total opposite. Besides some quick outline sketches I got really lazy with traditional art
