what a splendid photograph I was watching a pair of these ten days ago in a ravine with a stream at the base with lots of waterfalls feeding their youngsters while out drawing Bay willow leaves ... they are really graceful beautiful

thanks so much Lunnika you have reminded me of the wonderful sight of two pied wagtails catching food for the young in early summer yes the stream and waterfalls are called 'Hakons burn' .. a burn is a stream and King Hakon was of Norway in 11th 12th centuries and invaded north east Scotland also tried to invade south west coast of Scotland at battle of Largs  but retreated calling here for water on the way to the Orkney Islands where he was murdered by a cousin or half brother ... so the stream is called after him

yes the story is part of the Icelandic or norse sagas also here as hearsay oral history where Hakons men were defeated in a skirmish trying to obtain water ... but in real history a Viking burial was found here at the end of the second beach at Balnakeil which is two miles long ... uncovered by a storm with bones and sword/shield  other equipments for a norse burial ... I don't know more as a museums rescue team will have taken and stored it somewhere not local
