After doing a little bit of looking around on Google images I've decided to say it does seem like you did a very good ref on the anatomy! Basenjis are more of the lean type of dog as your art actually does show.
The fur shading is very good, especially for this breed and scene, and I love the shading detail you put in the transition between the midsection to the top of the back leg, it shows where the canines inner-most muscles are in this case and proves more of a smooth effect on the image.
The shading on the background is mostly OKAY though with the exception of shading for the life saver, it makes it seem a little more flat against it and rushed in my opinion.
The life saver does indeed look flat to me for some reason, but it is complementary to the background though a few more effects may of made it better like darker red, and maybe some sand on it or tidbits like that. But that's just my weird opinion.
The sand texture could be toned down a bit if you wanted to make the character "pop out" a little more but if the goal is to blend you did a good job with that!
Overall, this is a good piece of art compared to most canine artists! I hope to watch you perfect your skills to the hilt!

This piece looks quite good. The life raft (I think its a life raft, anyway) does seem a bit "deflated" or flat, compared to the rest of the image. The dog is well done, but also a bit flat-looking. That said, the 2-D appearance does not detract by much from the image itself. Other than thatm there isn't much to criticize about this. The water looks reasonably believable, the sand has a good, grainy looking texture to it, the shading is overall good, and the color choices seem to fit the image nicely.
