Description
With a clink of ice;
The streets are dead.
Wrapped in just a skirt,
“I’m freezing”
She said.
Her legs are blue,
Decorative and slight.
Drink your coffee;
It’s blacker than night.
Our plants are dying.
They’re wrinkled and brown.
Feed the roots salt,
They’re tied to the ground.
Douse the soil with cigarettes.
Refined and white.
A dying mans refuge,
Is stale to the sight.
My stomach is hollow.
Hunger claws up my throat.
So I clamp my teeth tight,
Hold that hunger,
And swallow.
The coffee is cold.
Trees have never been whiter.
The leaves are still wilting,
Despite their salt shower.
Her skirt has grown shorter.
Both legs are stiff,
Frosted and pale,
When she’s offered a cigarette.
It’s harder to speak,
With clamped tight teeth.
But she manages words well.
And says,
“No thank-you sir.
That’s bad for your health.”
