"Ursa Mater" - Latin for "Mother Bear"....

I made this for my sister as a gift for her baby shower - she is due in October and she'll be having a girl.

This is meant to be a nursery guardian...who better than to guard a baby than a mother bear? They will fight tooth and claw to defend their young, and I wanted that fierce protective energy to come through in this picture. I have a protection spell which will be cast on the artwork before I give it to my sister.

A bit about the symbolism...

I already talked about the bear itself, but there is also a few other things:

The symbol she's wearing around her neck is a celtic symbol for motherhood. Its hard to tell here, but there's a little gold jewel glued in the center.

The symbol between her hands is (obviously) a pentacle, which is often used a protective sigil.

The green color symbolizes the earth mother, while the butterflies signify transformation and new beginnings. Plus there's 9 of them, which was quite unintentional, but 9 is a sacred goddess number.

And finally, the circle behind her symbolizes the circle of birth, life, death, and rebirth. (In this case, we're talking about birth.)
