"Don't walk today !"...I have here words in my ears as if she had said it yesterday. She was a staff member of a little visitor center in the village El Palmar in the Teno Mountains in northwestern part of Isle of Teneriffa (Canarian Isles, Spain, Europe). And she was rightly very concerned, because we had in that July day nearly 45 degrees in the sun and the first part of our hiking trail to little village Teno Alto had some long steep passages...But in spite of the warning we decided to make this hike, because we wanted to see the phantastic scenes of the northwestern part of Teneriffa with its volcanic craters.
This landscape is why so interesting, because you have a weather devide here: To the north side of the mountains you have much rain and other humidity by the passat fog out of this direction so that the mountains - and especially the crater valleys are green. To the south side the mountains lay in rainshadow so that they are very dry and have mostly any vegetation. This geological and meteorological conditions cause a very exciting impression of nature on the second part of the hiking trail when you return from village Teno Alto along "Camino de Baracan" back to village El Palmar, because you always change (walking across or a little bit beneath crater rim) from green situations into only stony ones - we carried enough drinking water with us and in that was we had'nt no problem with the heat.
For me it had been also very interesting to learn something about the geological history of Teneriffa, what I did'nt know before: Teno Mountains in elder geo-historical times were an independant isle beside the two other independent isles "Teide" in the middle of the current isle and "Anaga" in the northeastern part of it, all with volcanic origin - the intensive volcanic eruptions during hundredthousands of years at the end let this three isles grow together...
