I have to ask-- how do you get the fur lines so thin? I use a small brush, but the lines are always thick because the canvas texture botches my brushwork. and the paint is too thick to make a thin line-- but if I thin it with retarder, then the colour is too translucent and I don't get the right effect anyway. Can I know your secret?? like the exact brand of brush and paint you use?? lol

I've been struggling with that for awhile, and honestly my first suggestion is to prime your canvas. I adore painting on wooden panels because once you sand/prime them they are smooth as hell, and they take to a ton of teensie details, whereas the texture from canvases does tend to make getting detail very difficult. Lately I've been giving my canvases at least 2 coats of thick primer (I use gesso), and then sand in between with fine grade sandpaper. Sometimes I put even more layers of gesso, the more layers the smoother the surface. And the smoother the surface, the more detail the surface can take.

I love working with retarder/blending mediums but yeah, if you're going for opacity its best to just thin the paint a tiny bit with water, just to make it fluid enough to have smooth lines.

I'm learning that more expensive paint is actually totally worth it (*cries for student budget*). I mostly use Windsor&Newton, Grumbacher, I have a few tubes of Golden and Liquitex too, and have a decent collection of the Liquitex Basics line, though I'm trying to phase those out. My latest superfine brushes are just from my campus's art supplies section of our bookstore. They don't have a brand on them but they are white taklon fibres, super soft, about $5 a brush.

Hope that helps!

I've been fighting with acrylics for awhile now, learning little tricks along the way.
