Well, here's an old curiosity (as folk say when they see me approaching) - this was drawn in early 1978. It was one of a the series of big pen and ink works I'd done as part of the collaboration with the publisher/poet I was working with on other things at that time. I can only think I was going for a style somewhere between movie poster and pulp illustration. Star Wars was still brand new (in the UK), but the influence here is more like a cross between old Flash Gordon, Quatermass, and an old British war film. Today it would be called steam-punk. Note the little dog, who couldn't care less about the explosions. I think the last line of the poem went something like 'Grant me now, this last embrace/Before I leave for outer space'. However, it's hard to know whether he's off to do fisticuffs with the aliens on their mother ship, or just buzz off to Mars and hide behind a rock until the whole thing blows over.
