alright lemme explain this.So! first i was in the mood to draw a bloody picture, then i drew an Australian Cattle dog (? amirite?).. then forgot the goriness of a bloody picture then added rain then forgot it then added fire by suggestion of a friend then remembered the rain then just... made this xD

Alright, so I told myself to try critiquing more xD So here's my first critique on art on DA... I hope it doesn't suck too bad xD
I'll start off with what I like about this piece. For one, it definitely catches the eye of a viewer passing by in the thumbnail form. The space is used well and the color choice comes off as very good to me. Flames in the darkness of a storm makes for some exciting composition. And the dog running through it just adds to the level of action in the scene. It's kinda hard to turn away from an image like this since it's far from static. Upon full view, you can see it's raining and the dog is wet. I also like how the stormy scene isn't overdone. For example, there wasn't a need for any lightning so it wasn't included. Very effective! I also like how the water dripping over the dog is done. It's a very cartoon-style way of doing it but it works since this wasn't meant to be a realism drawing e.deviantart.net/emoticons/r/r… " width="15" height="15" alt="
Now as for what can be improved...
I think the rain itself is what bothers me the most. A lot of people seem to do rain this way and it makes the rain seem kinda flat and one-dimensional, taking away from the depth of the image. Also, it's continuous without any gaps between the drops. I also think there should be more smoke above the flames rather than in the foreground, since smoke rises into the air. The sky is gray but that just appears to be the clouds since the tops of the flames don't seem to be concealed in anything at all.
As for the dog, it seems rather obvious that a smudge tool was involved with the lighting on the fur. It's a quick way to do it but unfortunately, not one that really shows you're working at full capability. Using the smudge tool like this takes away from potential detail that might be lying below. The head of the dog seems really well detailed but it doesn't seem to match the rest of the body too well. The blur options in Photoshop seem really overused. The rear end of the dog probably doesn't need to be blurred. Just the feet/legs since they're the parts that are actually moving. The fire looks a bit better, but it's still obvious that smudge tool was involved.
Fire is a difficult subject to paint, though. Your attempt here has worked better than others, at least.
Good dramatic scene and may be worth redoing someday when your lighting techniques have been improved on.
