Description Justice Speaks in Scrambled Morse Code. 09
Graphite Pencils

A page i started last night on the train up to my friends house.
I've just finished my first week of College. I wouldn't say that doing what we've done has made me better, but it has loosened up my hand and thoughts and made it easier for me to just draw and draw.

This piece is a bit messy, but after working on really large pieces of paper (A2) for everything, going all the way down to A5 was weird for me. It makes everything really contained and weird.

One of the strangest things about paper is that no matter what the size, you can either have an endless expanse of space or a tightly filled space.
With this, i just wanted to explore the characters head ornaments. The figure represents justice. And extends from another page in the same book this one is drawn in.

I'm uploading this piece tonight instead of a full colour piece because tonight as i was saving the file i spent half an hour scanning, photoshop froze and fucked up the original save file. SO, i'll have to get another scan of the painting on Monday!
So heads up on Monday or Tuesday
Also, this is a shite scan and i've upped the contrast too much.

"Justitia is most often depicted with a set of weighing scales typically suspended from her left hand, upon which she measures the strengths of a case's support and opposition. She is also often seen carrying a double-edged sword in her right hand, symbolizing the power of Reason and Justice, which may be wielded either for or against any party. "

"With her mighty sword in relaxed ready rest with point before the feet and hilt behind the same hip. She stands presenting her weighing-balance, moving forward to rest, sword ready to rise. Beneath the foot is crushed the neck of a coiling serpent; the serpent is crushed upon the Book of Law, and all are set on rocky ground."

That's all for now guys, Happy valentines day.

That is a terrifying, but incredibly cool justice. Also, thanks for adding the description of Justice in there, I'd never read that before. Very much appreciated.

I think those orbs on the sides are fine, but if you wanted to replace them...maybe with...something signifying support and opposition. What the hell would that be? Or balance...Obviously I suck at ideas and advice. The best advice I can think of is...don't run with sharp objects. Yeah, I suck.

mate.. the shading is fuckin sweet.
the top part of the head flows really well with the holes/tentacle jigs.
But.. the skull teeth look a little off to me.
Its probably because its not symmetrical, buts thats all opinion I guess.
Good to see some more stuff man
keep it up

This is a very interesting interpretation..
...I have to applaud you for finding originality with this image,
because this could have easily become another redundant
re-creation of the scales of justice...
Im really liking the simple composition, with just enough
information for the audience to gather their thoughts, but I
find those little "yo-yo" type orbs on the sides to be a little
distracting and out of place.

....and just based off of my initial glance of the image I thought
that this could have been an unique and modern interpretation
of the mythical "Gorgon".
Awesome stuff!!

Thanks,

You think i should have removed the scales?

I thought that strengthened it's portrayal of "Justice"

Anyway, just an idea im playing with.
It was based on: [link]

from a previous page.

hmmm that's interesting....
I think the scales work much better in
your previous drawing.

I suppose your piece could work independently
without the scales and the audience could
still have enough information to grasp the
concept, but I don't think you should remove
them.
The thing is that right now the scales
could be seen as distracting, or not
distracting enough.....does that make
any sense???...haha
They seem to be an after-thought compared
to the rest of the drawing. While the way
you approached the scales in your other
drawing is more cohesive...it flows.

I might be making a big deal out of nothing
though....hmmm.....I don't know...

Oh wait....you know what?
I think the difference is in the length of
the strings holding the scales. It appears to
be half the length in your original drawing
that makes it work much better...
THe longer strings seem to throw off the balance
and unity of the piece...

As you can tell I tend to over-analyze things...haha

I love the piece though....
....and once again compliments on the unique interpretation.

Well i also over analyse. It's good to see things no one else sees.

I see what your saying, when i was drawing it, i thought that the length of the strings was equal to the dimensions of the box.

I'm not sure where to go with this. Whether to draw it again... I think I'm going to draw it from different perspectives.
