You know, I must be really dumb. 
I have so many friends (in business - before I retired) who speak between two and five languages. I don't know how they/you do it. In my next lifetime, I hope I am smart enough to know that knowing only one language is a real draw back. In that next lifetime, I want to become an international language specialist. Of course, maybe as the human race evolves we will learn how to speak telepathically - there only one language is needed... the language of the Universe.

I'd say it is more a matter of circumstances and need than being dumb or smart. Most people can learn several languages when there is a need for it. Many americans have no pressing need to learn more languages.
My mom is swedish speaking and I went to a swedish speaking school, dad is finnish. We spoke both at home, so I got those two there. As a kid I was into computers and scifi litterature. I needed english for those, so I had great incentive to learn it. I did study english for 8 years in school too
Best thing would be if there was a language which was thought in all schools, in all countries. No better way to start understanding each other better, than to have a common language shared by everyone. Maybe that will happen in the future.
