I think that was kinda the idea to keep him mysterious for those who never played FF7. One the one hand, it can be seen how it adapts to his persona as a lone wolf, keeping to himself as he believes only he himself can conquer his own darkness. On the other hand, people will say "Wanna know more about him? PLAY HIS F***ING GAME!!"

That could be the reasoning behind it. But since KH Cloud is an entirely different universe from FF Cloud, it seems like if you went to go play FFVII to get more on him, you'd be getting an entirely different experience anyways.

Well its the same as KH Tidus being VERY different from FF Tidus, either way, players would be curious about their original game if encouraged to play. Then again, that could also apply to Disney characters (rarely) like say people who play KH2 before watching Beauty and the Beast would have no idea that Gaston is a major part of the original film until they learn for themselves.
