Description This was prompted by one of the barn owls I work with-- during a presentation, when I wasn't quick enough to call her to the glove, she spontaneously decided to land on my shoulder-- talons and all. It was Not Pleasant.

I would imagine that having a bird five times larger than a barn owl suddenly land on your shoulder would be a bit of a problem, magic or no magic!

This is the best thing I have ever seen regarding birds and Harry Potter. I am so happy right now I'm grinning like an idiot!!!

Haha, I love the contrast between Draco's smooth expression in the first, and look of terror in the second. JKR admits she made some errors with the owls in the books, but I never thought about this before! Very funny, thank you.

I don't have any experience with owls, but my dad does - and he got a pretty nasty gouge from a juvenile barn owl. I can only imagine what one of these freaking winged goliaths would do.

I enjoy working with our eagles more than our barn owls, yeah.

I've actually seen one of these in person recently. HUGE birds! And the one I saw was only 5 years old, so she probably had some room to grow still.

(Their wingspans are insanely huge, too. There was a very impressive FLOOF of wind, which made the 3-foot-tall fan blowing behind it seem barely noticeable in comparison, when that bird started flapping around!)

Birds don't grow like mammals do. An eagle owl reaches its adult weight/size within three months of hatching, so a 5-year-old is absolutely as big as she'll ever be. Weight fluctuates within limits. But yeah, they're massive birds!

You know, I love Harry Potter, both books and film. But being a falconer and having had large birds such as Eagle Owls land on my glove and feeling their talons even then, passages like that always make me chuckle as I imagine what would actually happen.

Same, obviously. I wouldn't want my big female great-horned on my shoulder.

Laughed my butt off for this.

I too work at a wildlife center, and we have a eurasian named suzy who absolutely hates me.

They hurt..even with a nice, thick leather glove between you and them.

None of the others do it but we hand raised the barn owls last summer and everyones become a bit lenient with them XD They get told off when they land on other people though!

I've always wondered what it was like to have a bird land on you like that... because i always noticed "most birds have some sort of nail/claw on each finger" but no matter the bird size it never seems to hurt on tv, does it... lol

Great drawings. ^^
