Description I Went to the art shop today since i had used up all my paper and i ended up getting some water colour paints (yes, actually paints not pencils lol) and i found out they are so much better than the pencils.

Erheerrrm...

This is a forest kingfisher, offenly mistaken for the little kingfisher and the sacred kingfisher since they are pretty similar in appearence. i chose to do one since the blue was pretty in the photo i used so yeah, looks nice anyways for an amateur water colour painter

along with the art spree i ordered a camera that my cousin (she does professional photographty) considered i buy if i want good resolution photos for drawing, there goes all my job money i had saved up lol

Close up: [link]

i got some MDF today too so im gunna try out some oils later, any ideas on what to paint? no fantasy please....

which one did u only know of? i have seen probably about 4 different kinda of kingfishers, this is one of the more rarer ones i dont see often, i usually see greenish ones with black bands around their faces.

thanks, its not really what i'd call good but i cant say i dislike it, they eye is nice i agree

the blue-and-orange one, common kingfisher (alcedo atthis)

i'd never though before that something like that one was a kingfisher too, or another one . or this one there's some more in that guy's gallery

LyrebirdJacki In reply to weida34 [2009-09-14 11:32:35 +0000 UTC]

wow apart from that common kingfisher i'd never seen any of those kingfishers, they look very exotic. The common kingfisher i presume is a european bird? i notice alot of european artists' draw them.

i get these kingfishers where i live:
little kingfisher: [link]
Forest kingfisher: [link]
red backed kingfisher: [link]
sacred kingfisher: (the ones i see often) [link]

that guy's gallery is awesome, some nice pictures there

they look exotic to me too. as do yours

yeah, and what i like about his gallery as well is that he posts descriptions and not just pics

LyrebirdJacki In reply to ArianSilver [2009-08-23 13:14:39 +0000 UTC]

we have lapwings in australia tho they look very differnt from those, what's the name for them? since there are a few kinds of lapwings it might be a hassle to find good refs

ArianSilver In reply to LyrebirdJacki [2009-08-23 13:31:52 +0000 UTC]

It's a Nothern Lapwing I believe. Also people call them Green Plover or Peewit.

id love to do airbrush backgrounds tho, did them in year 8, its pretty easy and gives it an awesome effect like in photograpths but i fear my wallet will not allow such ideas

mooing-duckerberry In reply to LyrebirdJacki [2009-08-23 04:47:40 +0000 UTC]

I've never played with airbrushing at all. Does it take fancy equipment?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LyrebirdJacki In reply to mooing-duckerberry [2009-08-23 08:06:17 +0000 UTC]

yeah unfortuently, u have a little gun spray which u attach a bottle filled with normal paint. the gun is attached to an air pressure hose and u pull the trigger on the gun and it sprays.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mooing-duckerberry In reply to LyrebirdJacki [2009-08-23 19:28:50 +0000 UTC]

That sounds like tons of fun! Except the whole lugging an air compressor around bit... that could get miserable.

Gosh is there any medium you can't be good in? I've often wondered how watercolour artists do that splodgy effect like you have in your bg.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LyrebirdJacki In reply to Diin-kun [2009-08-22 16:21:23 +0000 UTC]

u wet the paper and drip the paint on it and it flowers or "bleeds" like that, u can mix other colours like i did and they still bleed, as long as the paper is wet u can do it.

nah it still isnt that good, i've still got a bit to do until i conqouer watercolour

we have loads of pigeons that visit my yard for the chooks' food, i swear u can just pick them up cos they are so fat, take a bit longer to take off the ground too lol.

ahh. i love pigeons.
i dont like it when they are called vermin at school. i still leave them my crusts hehe. they are way to cutee.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LyrebirdJacki In reply to el-feather [2009-08-25 05:25:56 +0000 UTC]

they arnt a problem here as far as i know, tho leaving baits out for them would be bad (as i have heard they do to pigeons when they become pests) since other birds can easily consume the bait and die from it, and not just birds either. i like to feed the ibises, seagulls, plovers, mudlarks and pigeons when i go for my bike rides after school, even tho the seagulls and plovers are pretty much hated by everyone, gets some trust out of them so when they take over the world they may spare me for a crust
