Description Cardiff, 2009
3 Exposure HDR

Because a couple of people have been curious where exactly this was taken, here's a google maps link:

The cemetary is called 'Cathays Cemetary', and the building in question is a chapel. Here's a wikipedia link as well:

Love this, a great image.

Not in anyway flawed by the usual HDR faults. No serious noise in the sky, no halo around the building (I always struggle with that), beautiful dramatic lighting. Personally, I would have cloned out the bin as it doesn't fit with the image style and tone, and I would have increased the contrast in some of the mid tones, but really just a personal thing. I also like what you have done with the border, simple but effective.

Difficult to criticise, good job.

Thank you so much for the detailed feedback!

The waste-bin is something I completely overlooked when processing this one, I have to admit - I seldomly clone out parts of the image unless they are really annoying me (in which case, most of the time, the composition was broken to begin with).

As for the noise: my source images did have a serious amount of noise in it, but in my experience this is best dealt with before processing it in photomatix, etc. The noisereduction of photomatix or even lightroom itself is never going to be as good as a plugin that specializes on that, of course, so doing that seperately does pay off in my experience...

Thanks again for the feedback!

Wow! I've been in Cardiff several times, and fell in love with this city, but I have no idea where this is! One more thing to add to the list whenever I get back (hopefully this summer).
But I really love this view. It's like it captured what there really is behind that building and, well, the place in general!

Thank you so much for the lovely critique! I'm glad you like the view, it is absolutely stunning. I really can recommend having a look around the rest of the cemetary as well, it's wonderfully old, full of overgrown graves and ancient trees... If you're wondering where it is exactly, here's a google maps link: [link] Additionally, I also updated the description with a link to the wikipedia page of Cathays Cemetary, in case you're interested! I hope you'll have fun checking it out the next time you're there!

Thanks again for the comment and !

Thank you! You're right, it _is_ a stunning building... I had trouble figuring out what it was _supposed_ to be used as

All the best & Thanks for the !

Apparently it was a muli-pourpas building and the one wingwas used for Anglican services while the other was used by Non-Conformists apparently according to this site here

ah Cathays, i walked past this cemetary just the other day, my granddad used to call it "the dead centre of cardiff".

aw, that's nice well... that dead centre looks like the place i'd like to be come the time the parties must be endless...

Absolutely awesome picture. I've lived in Cardiff all my life, been to the cemetery several times over the years, and have never fully appreciated the beauty of this building.

Did you know it's actually a very rare thing - it's a kind of double-barrelled chapel. I think they might be different religious denominations, if I remember rightly.

You've done a first-class job, kind of makes me want to go there with the camera. I think it might be a good subject for night HDR too...... Hmmmm

Hej, thanks a lot for the comment! I have to admit, I stumbled upon this cemetery purely by chance, but the second I stepped into it, the place had me... Of course, the chapel is otherworldly by itself, but the old parts, graves overgrown by moss, etc... simply amazing.

I didn't know it was so rare, but I've seen quite a lot of churches in my life and (even though I'm not an expert on church architecture) I'd have remembered if I had seen something like this before...

A night HDR... sounds like a great idea...! Be sure to let me know when you've done one, I'm curious to see how you perceive the place...!

thanks again for the comment, i do appreciate people who take the time to look at a piece and give sound commentary!

Gorgeous shot.

I live in Cardiff myself and this picture really demonstrates that you don't have to live in the most strikingly beautiful places (like Austria) to get fantastic shots.

hehe, thank you... but cardiff was at least as strikingly beautiful as austria is, if not a little more

Ohhh, how cool! This kind of photo is taken by merging three different exposures, or how is it? Never tried it myself, but I'm dying to... :3 Well done, looks amazingly cool!

LyrixDeRaven In reply to LaCamilla [2009-12-27 01:34:30 +0000 UTC]

yes, it is... it's actually quite easy, so if you'd like to try it i'd recommend this tutorial: Trey Ratcliff Stuck in Customs. It's simple to understand yet explains the main ideas quite well, I'd say...

And... thanks for the kind words, of course!

do-you-sell-crisps [2009-12-15 02:25:28 +0000 UTC]

Last time I saw that building it was covered in scaffolding. It's good to see it's all gone at last

I might be tempted to get rid of the border- I think the photo's already good enough without having to add more to it

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LyrixDeRaven In reply to do-you-sell-crisps [2009-12-15 09:08:11 +0000 UTC]

you might be right, it's almost overdoing it... but then again, that's the age-old discussion when it comes to borders, isn't it? in this case, i was quite happy with it, as it helps obscure the sign that's sort of cut-off to the left...
