Description Vestal

Living is a sacrifice
of Futile altars,
stained with bloodlessness
marble smooth and
taunting white, with
fractures, chiseled grooves
A fine pale powder from
where stone has begged
and sought to give
lies dusty, clinging to the
floor til the Virgins
come to sweep the
rocky pain into the
sanctuary's shadows
and leave no superstitious
trace of the alabaster groans

One summer, though, the
crop will fail, as now, the
treacherous winds of Achean
rage billow and curse
As finally the Iphiginea bows
To give her father- or her love-
What Poseidon smiles for

And the parched stone weeps
thanks as the scarlet sigh of
Ecstacy
pours into its pores.
