Headcanon (Future AU):

So after all Sunset did grow up taller than Twilight, thought she doesn't grow up more. She stay the same size Luna had, while Twilight stay the same.
In does years that had past, Sunset learn from Twilight but later she started her studies with Princess Luna while Twilight was still Princess Celestia's student. When both of then end there studies both princesses switch with them. Neither Twilight non Sunset knew why. Both princesses show them how to raise the sun and the moon, and the both Twilight and Sunset knew what they where doing. Both princess where retiring and was for Twilight and Sunset to take their place.
At first neither of Twilight or Sunset didn't want the responsibility because non of them thought they were capable of taking a huge responsibility. But they didn't have much choice because both Princess Celestia and Princess Luna disappear.
Both Twilight and Sunset became the new princesses of Equestria.
While Twilight raises the moon, Sunset raises the sun.
