Description First off, for this piece, and for the seventeen subsequent pieces, CotSF will stand for Courts of the Shadow Fey. Courts, as I will henceforth shorten it, is the big freelance project that I was working on during April through June. I'll be discussing various aspects of the project in some of the descriptions, so be sure to read them if you're interested in that sort of thing.

So, this was the first piece that I did for Courts. The Eye Golem is a monolithic, sentinel-like character, very strong and able to shoot beams of light out of its eyes (to what affect, I don't know).

All of the pieces I did for Courts were done in this pen and ink style, which was a new thing for me, and alternately fun and tedious. The first few pieces I did, including this one, were done in a more typical painterly style. The art director, however, was concerned about whether the subtleties of that style would come through in the printing process, so he had me switch over to an easier to read line art style. So, this is actually a redone version. I may post the original sometime. I have several concept sketches to show of this guy as well.

Speaking of concept sketches, one of my main challenges throughout this project was to create an overall look. Since I was turning out new pieces on a weekly basis, I didn't really have time to establish a look at the start, so I basically created the look as I went. I feel pretty good about the job I did. The eye symbols/tattoos on this guy tied into the design of another eye-themed character that I drew later.

More to come!

The blocky fingers and the undefined head and feet really make the character feel made rather than born. I like how the eyes are all looking in different directions or doing something different from any of their neighbours. It also reminds me of the Blemmyes from Greek/medieval bestiaries.

One problem is that the body seems twisted, so the shoulders are no longer at the same angle to the viewer as the hips.
