Hey Matthew!
I'm really tempted to try the SU background style myself and I was wondering if you'd maybe mind helping me out with the brush set? I'm just having a bit of an issue with the grainy texture so far and the clouds. I'd even appreciate a tutorial if you wouldn't mind making a new one? You've grown quite a lot as an artist since the first Steven Universe tutorial you made on Youtube.
Idk if you check DeviantArt still. I'll email you as well!
Very beautiful work, you inspire me greatly.

Hello,
first off sorry for a late reply i dont check things all too often.
The brushes i was using were from Kyle's Mega pack specifically the big texture ones (i believe the set is now available to the public for free) and some custom ones just to try match some of the textures i was seeing.
As for the whole process i really dont have the time to revisit this style for a tutorial however i will say i poured countless hours looking at all the background art i could from the show and then going to the blog page of the artist who stylings are used and seeing how they specifically work.
From what i can infer of the process its as follows:
Main elements are solid colours and using the lasso tool for cutting out shapes then mostly layer over the textured parts first as their block colours then erase using textured brushes, the exception is wet surfaces which can use a gradient from colour to transparent.
As for clouds its similar but that blurry edge is just the smudge tool.
Water is a bit more annoying as its alot of layers over each other and then setting those layers to overlay.
For when lines are used its just a very thin pastel/crayon type brush normally in a light brown or light black
Like i said you really just gotta look at the backgrounds every little detail, then try visually reconstruct the process until it's looking correct.
The point where i left i was happy to say that i had finished my visual studies to the point where i wanted them.
