In memory of Paul Reubens (August 27, 1952 - July 30, 2023).

I know it's almost been a couple weeks since the news of Paul Reuben's death broke out; but I don't think it's ever too late to show your appreciation for someone.
He was one my favorite entertainers and voice actors. When I heard the news about his death, it hit me like an atom bomb. I still can't believe it happened! He made so many people laugh and smile with all of the work he's done.

I know many other Paul Reubens tributes have something to do with his Pee-Wee Herman persona, but I couldn't make the guy look right in my art style. He just kept looking a bit unsettling each time I tried to draw him. But I really wanted to draw some kind of tribute thing! So to work this out, I went with one of his voice roles instead (who also just happens to be my favorite character in the film). Paul Reubens voiced Lock in not only The Nightmare Before Christmas movie, but he also reprised his role in The Nightmare Before Christmas: Oogie's Revenge video game. Earlier in development, I was planning to add other characters Paul Reubens voiced: Golly Gopher (Re-Animated, The TV movie from Cartoon Network), Reuben (Chowder), and maybe Pavel (TRON: Uprising). However, as I was working on this I opted for a sweet yet sad scene at the Spiral Hill Graveyard. Another early concept would've had Lock dressed as Pee-Wee Herman, but I think that idea was taken. Another idea I had for this was a recreation of the Speechless tribute art to Mel Blanc but with the characters Paul Reubens voiced next to the spotlight instead. However, I ended up going against that because I felt that idea was kinda done to death (no pun intended).

So here we have Lock sitting on a tombstone in the middle of the Spiral Hill Graveyard. As he is sitting on the tombstone, Zero floats on by to comfort him. I've added some details on the main tombstone like Paul Reubens date of birth and death date. I have Lock holding a small bunch of dark colored roses, since Halloween Town has mostly more or less dead or monstrous plants or something. I thought it would be fitting for the scene to have Lock carry some. I outlined Zero in a silver Sharpie marker to accentuate his ghostly appearance. I've also used the same silver Sharpie for the outline on Lock's tears and the wind in the background. I've used a gold metallic Sharpie marker for the outline of the moon behind Spiral Hill, just so it would give the moon a faint glowing look. I honestly couldn't think of anything creative to write on any of the tombstones. I was planning to upload this along with a bulk of other art things I was working on, but I felt that it would take a few weeks to do. By the time I have those other things done, it would probably be September by then.
