if you could, explain to me simple terms what each area is?

+ the inflatable front seems for crew
+ the orange tin foil ? (never understood that in spaceships and probes)
+the tubes hanging around the two large fuel tanks (i assume fuel tanks) =3

Inflatable section is for crew (less mass for more volume).
The foil is thermal insulation. - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multi-la…
The tubes around the tanks are for structural reinforcement.

Its a beautiful rendition!!! but why are people continuously using the old outdated flight configuration, Smithsonian did it in the Journey to Space IMAX movie. The service module for all Orion Mission is now being made by Airbus off a human rated configuration of the Albert Einstein ATV (automated transfer vechile) under the NASA / ESA agreement signed in December 2013.

MacRebisz In reply to KeltischWerWolf [2015-08-17 12:02:03 +0000 UTC]

thanks! And I'm aware that current configuration for service module is based of the ESA'sΒ ATV tech, but I'm not sure if you've noticed that my version is "Orion 1980" In my project's timeline, Orion spacecraft is a direct successor of Apollo spacecraft, hence theΒ AJ10 nozzle on the service propulsion system.

Did you ever do the fun thing on NASA's website where you could get your name put on the first test flight back in 2014? They have submissions for the Mars Insight mission in 2016, and have scheduled the same thing for the next Orion flight.

yeah, i've already "flown" on ETF-1 on board Orion and thanks for letting me know about Insight mission, I'll submit my name there for sure!

I saw the Orion Sapcecraft on it's first launch. It's so small and quiet compared to the Space shuttle. Β

I can't find the exact one,Β it was a while ago and KSP version changed since I've built it, but here's the similar one that I took screenshot of. The fuel tanks are detached in pairs when empty.Β

Nostalgia - I can recall reading old space exploration books and seeing images and illustrations like this. They really captured the feel of the excitement over space travel. I'd say this certainly has that element as well.

Yeah, old space exploration books and all unrealized space agencies plans are exactly what inspired the Space That Never Was project in the first place. Thanks, glad you like it!

An awesome design, terrific work! The propellant tanks and inflatable habitat are great, what's the purpose of the foil-covered spine between them? More fuel? Storage?

Thanks! The insulated section is mostly storage and pressurized labs for experiments.
