Sketchy sketch for my Jack/Ianto headcanon:When Jack thinks Ianto is asleep, he tells Ianto all about time travel and about the places he’s visited and all the places he would take him. Jack doesn’t tell Ianto about any of this to his face because he doesn’t want to disappoint Ianto; he thinks there’s no way for them to get to time travel or visit other planets. As far as Jack knows, they’re stuck on Earth, and any day could be Ianto’s last.
But sometimes Ianto is awake, and he listens to Jack talk about travelling the stars with him. And he’s happy, because even though he’s pretending to be asleep, he can tell that Jack is smiling.

I don't know, what with time travel being all wibbly wobbly and all that, (and many life-saving possibilities like nanogenes) Ianto doesn't have to be gone forever. I think he was good for Jack, and it's not fair that Jack should be alone, so...yeah, canon can go to hell, they'll find a way somehow. They'll keep quiet with their lives so as not to disturb important points in time and space and just go on adventures, maybe rift-hopping.
