I didn't even need to see Meowth's tail. Nice cameo of Jessie and James, and I'm pretty freaked over May's OOCness. Seriously, she'll see the scars when he goes swimming.
(And those scars are fucking gorgeous and terrifying, pardon my french. People don't survive that kind of attack.)

I am guessing either a Charizard attacked him or some other three-clawed Pokemon, thus scaring him physically and emotionally, because of the feeling of helplessness he must of gotten from being attacked, but this is just a guess.
