In the fields of Tuscany during the reign of ancient Rome, there lived a wealthy and arrogant Roman farmer named Marcus. He was known for his simple yet lavish lifestyle and his mistreatment of those beneath him, including his beasts of burden, such as his ox, Diana. Marcus owned several oxen, but Diana held a special place in his heart, or rather, a place of subjugation.
Day after day, Marcus would force Diana to toil under heavy loads, disregarding her exhaustion and pain. He would whip her mercilessly, caring little for her well-being. Knowing no other life, she would always comply, aware that disobedience would result in even harsher punishment.
As fate would have it, Saturnalia, the festival of role reversals, approached. During this time, the social hierarchy would be temporarily upturned, and the lowly could experience a taste of power. Unbeknownst to Marcus, Diana had always possessed a gentle spirit and unwavering determination. She harbored a secret wish for Marcus to learn the true meaning of humility.
As Marcus woke up on the first day of Saturnalia, a sense of unease settled in his chest. Suddenly, a tingling sensation coursed through his body, starting at his fingertips and radiating outward. It was as if invisible threads were pulling and stretching his limbs, reshaping them into hooves. His skin prickled with an otherworldly energy, and he could feel his bones shifting, elongating, as his human form gave way to that of an ox. The weight of his own body grew heavier with each passing moment, muscles bulging and reshaping to accommodate his new form. Panic and terror gripped him as he felt his once agile fingers fuse together, transforming into a solid hoof. The sound of cracking joints echoed in his ears as his spine elongated, his human posture replaced by a hunched and powerful frame. The transformation was a symphony of discomfort, his skin stretching and tightening, hair sprouting from every pore, covering his once-smooth flesh. The once familiar touch of fabric against his skin was now replaced by the coarse sensation of fur. The final sensation, a deep vibration, resonated within him, as his voice transformed into a low and resonant bellow. Marcus had become an ox, his body now mirroring the creature he had once mistreated, and a profound sense of helplessness washed over him, mirroring the torment he had inflicted on others. Confusion mixed with desperation, and he tried to call out for help, but only a deep and low bellow escaped his lips.
As the bewildered ox wandered out of his villa and into the field, he was approached by a woman. Unbeknownst to Marcus, this woman used to be his former beast of burden, Diana, who, in the spirit of Saturnalia, had undergone a transformation of her own.
With compassion in her eyes, Diana approached the transformed Marcus. "Do you recognize me?" she asked, her voice gentle but firm.
Marcus's eyes widened, a flicker of realization crossing his face. He attempted to speak, but his voice failed him once again.
Diana, now a human, touched his snout tenderly. "You mistreated me, Marcus," she said. "You treated me as a mere object, inflicting pain without remorse. Now, through the power of Saturnalia, you will experience the life you forced upon me."
Though he couldn't communicate his thoughts, Marcus felt a profound remorse as he experienced firsthand the suffering he had inflicted on Diana and the other animals. He now understood the weight of his actions, the cruelty he had displayed.
Diana guided Marcus, now an ox, to her former stall, which was just that - a stall, completely the opposite of the luxurious chambers he had for himself. There, she cared for him, ensuring he had food and water. She showed him kindness and mercy, demonstrating the qualities he had lacked.
As the days of Saturnalia passed, Marcus's transformation began to unravel his haughty demeanor. The walls of pride and arrogance crumbled as he realized the value of empathy and compassion. The work he was forced to do gave him an entire new understanding in what his animals had to go through.
As the final day of Saturnalia arrived, Marcus and Diana braced themselves for the end of the magical festivities. However, to their astonishment, the transformations did not reverse. The effects of the spell had become permanent, forever altering their fates.
With a mix of apprehension and acceptance, Marcus realized that he would remain an ox, forever changed by his own mistreatment of Primus. He looked into Diana's eyes, now filled with a complex blend of empathy and resolve. He understood that his punishment was not just a temporary lesson but a lifelong reminder of the consequences of his actions.
Begrudgingly accepting their fate, Diana led Marcus into the field for another day of plowing the field. What was only supposed to be a couple of days for Marcus had turned into the beginning of a lifetime of servitude under Diana.
