I always use just one tool.. The trusty pen/pencil/brush/ whatever tool.. Maybe just a little bit of blur too..

Have I ranted to you about "wet brush" in MyPaint? Okay, there's about 10 wet brushes but they're so frickin' cool... they're like a multi-shade blend without smooth gradients... they can also lighten dark shades without changing colors over and over again
