Oh, I bet she is smart.  My Tortie was the only one of my three indoor cats that would open cabinets, let me know what she wanted and greet my at the door. 
I look forward to seeing more of your cat photo as she grows!

Zoey is beautiful!!   Zoey is a Calico.  Torties lack the white.  Aw, Zoey should have many more years ahead.  To me, 8 is still a youngster

Yes I agree she is only middle aged .. I didnt realize the white makes here a calico .. I have a few cats I consider calico with patchy patterns of Black White and Orange .. but except for the white throat and paws and the tip of here tail .. she has primarily the Black and orange striping of a tortie.

Yes, I have heard different things.  I have heard "tabby-Calico,"  Tortie-white,"  etc.  But the color patches on your cat, reflects as a Calico.   Torties have a different fur pattern and generally no white.  A male tortie is very rare.
