Description For Inktober 2023, I'm doing a month of mythologically originating monster people that aren't just some variation of elf or dwarf.

Did I just remember that Japan existed or something? Finishing the Nippon Hat-trick, the horned devils. They are sorta lumped in with ogre who, it seems, share a name origin with "orc", who themselves are derived from "hell devil". Thus, the three O's really make a nice, unified brute.

The description of oni come across as a cannibal caveman: muscular, wears a loincloth, big teeth, wild hair, claws, wields a club. It's a fancy metal cudgel rather than a felled tree, but still. Very neanderthal man. One must embrace the old artwork style used in early depictions to get just how inhuman these things were. The crisp clean lines of the hero contrast with the excess skin and bizarre protrusions covering the body. (buuut, that's basically how i draw bodies anywise, so... [that's what i get for using myself as a reference point for human anatomy; also why i drew arms WAY too long for years]) And as these guys traditionally wore tiger tighty whities, so they let a lot show.

The face is shown more like a dragon than a man, especially with the crazy bug eyes. I like a good ol' pig nose due to a pork/orc naming connection (and Gemfire). Regardless, the surest sign of an evil doer there, at least to Japan. ... I feel attacked.

Pen and ink (Higgins, waterproof drawing ink, black india).
