Description I was looking at my ceiling today and realized I haven't made an expressive piece in quite a while.

Then I looked at the newspaper and took some action.

The ads in the background all came from one paper (Thanksgiving day) for Black Friday.

I use that toaster to make delicious toast.

This is more conceptual than people, but let me honour your request for a crit, and share my feelings & thoughts as best I can!
I've been staring at this for a couple of weeks. First off, I didn't like it at all, but it has grown on me.

The title goes with the toaster - it implies, for me, a story around the toaster, and opinions and experiences shared around it - almost like it's a catalyst. The guy is almost secondary in this concept - the toaster is the touchpoint for the picture. The newspapers, for some reason, make me think that you are moving house - wrapping stuff up, and arguing about taking a broken toaster, or something. (That's what I see there - maybe my medication is hitting me a little strongly today e.deviantart.net/emoticons/w/w… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Wink)"/> !)

As a photograph?
I find the perspective a little unbalanced. The 28mm is a gentle wide-angle, and the toaster and his front leg are a little enlarged by that. The effect is good on the toaster, but distracting on the leg. A higher camera position might have centralised the toaster, and emphasised its importance. The cable could have been used more effectively - it gets a little lost in the newprint - either let it swing, and catch different angles (could be a nice left-right lead in?), or a slightly different camera-cable-leg alignment?
Alternatively, take it right out to 18mm or so, and make the toaster bigger. But that might lose some of the subtle interplays that are emerging.

Cole comes out well, and looks good in the image. It would be nicer for me if his eyes were looking straight into the camera - it would underline the "you" of the title, and make for a more powerful statement, rather than a seemingly hesitant glance up as if saying 'is this how I should hold it?'. You can afford more boldness here, I think.

I find all those images on the newspaper quite distracting, particularly the red. And his left elbow has ended up framed in an ad that makes it look rather square and bulky.

The concept here can work, but the combination of ideal angle and expression hasn't quite 'clicked' for me.

I appreciate your time and thought in this. I mostly agree that I should have done something with the cord.

I should point one thing out, perhaps as a bit of cultural context. "Black Friday', mentioned in the artist's comments" is the day after our Thanksgiving Holiday. It is THE busiest shopping day of the year in the US, and I find it the day that truly shows how disgusting people can behave. People quite literally get hospitalized, couples treat eachother like dirt, and decency toward other is nearly nonexistent. The papers in the shot are all advertisements from ONE newspaper.

Thats not to say I disagree with the concept you found. I think your perspective on it is great. But its worth mentioning, just in case you were unfamiliar with Black Friday.

Indeed (and possibly fortunately!) I am unfamiliar with "Black Friday"! Ours would be Christmas eve, but it doesn't seem quite that extreme.

I guess that a Romanian and a Thai reviewer would see other stuff too. That's the joy of the internet!

Thanks for the feedback

I of course, am also mentioning extreme situations, but I have seen it, and its just gross. But yes, perception is a wonderful thing. So thanks again for taking time to share.

Great shot. I really like everything about it. The papers in the background almost seem to suggest a house when it's in thumbnail view. The expression on the subject's face is just perfect as well. Nice job!

Thanks! The expression/emotion was the one thing I wasn't really certain about when I was directing. This is actually one of my best pals, and he's proactive and crazy enough that he mostly took care of it, and with good results.

I like photos that take waaay longer to setup than to execute. So it was fun.
