Spent all summer '08 on this. Unable to release this image until now. Keep a look-out on the intarr-webs in the very near future for news. Hoping that all the work I put into this might help catch some attention. We're always looking for skillful helpers. 
I was the Art department lead at the time but have moved to Creative Director. It's always been and always continues to be a pleasure and an honor to work with the fine people in this project.

OS used: Ubuntu Hardy with Cross Over.
Hardware: Lenovo X61 Tablet laptop.
Do not redistribute for sale, claim as your own work, or remove the credits in the image. Well, Duh.
And as for derivatives of this work-- I extend the use of modifications of my work ONLY for means of satire, manipulation of size, and cropping (like if you want to make it into a banner for a forum or whatever). though it took me some time to realize the whole tragedy of Sonic Xtreme, Project-S and all involved members, this one's for sure worth a favourite - on the side of honest video game art and deep fascination with it's output despite beeing not such a Sonic fan, too.

I'm not too big on Sonic anymore, to be honest. He's been far past his prime for some years now, but the old Genesis days were definitely great. It's a shame-- seems almost like that time right around Xtreme was when the franchise got some really bad ju-ju that just won't give in. :T I'm convinced its all cursed now. Just waiting for Colors to be a total deadpan failure like its predecessors.
Project-S was a lot of fun, though. A really... "unique" learning experience, and I made some really great friends in the process. I'd say about half a dozen of us are still pretty close-knit, so even though the game was a flop, it did produce something worth all that time and effort.

Hm, the only Sonic I ever played was Sonic Adventure 2: Battle on the GameCube and I still like rushing through the levels with pulsy music on and pumping my favourite chao.
But on the other hand I didn't show much interest in earlier Sonic games, so they clearly just want to get another audience more interested in licensed rockmusic and shiny graphics... (that's a a bit like what's going on with Metroid: Other M, but only with bad cutscenes and less content).

But I have a little critique - sonic's glove ribbing and socks look a lot more detailed than his own shading... it just makes it look out of place to me.
But it's still very good... I love the background and the shading on the socks themselves... so detailed.

You should add No Derivatives to your Creative Commons license. Otherwise your comment and states intent goes against the license you've put it against.
Satire and reasonable format shifting are protected by the limitations on Copyright in most countries. Either via Fare Use or Fair Dealing. You wouldn't be able to stop someone making a satire even if you wanted to for instance.
