Description Rebranding madPotato.de... (experimental)

I'm playing with the idea of developing a set of "collectible business cards" that fit the individual client's / job's style (clients who are interested in graphics design could be handed a more boldly designed card than those how i.e. are interested in web-design).

Hi. Was wondering if you've had a chance yet to upload any tutorials regarding the process to create those abstract shapes? I am a designer myself, and REALLY interested in knowing how you did that!! REally cool!!

Hey!
Sadly, I haven't. This is still in the list of things "to do when I finally find the time". Commissioned work is keeping me constantly busy though. But you have my word that there'll eventually be a tutorial on this

I don't know about your Photoshop skills, but for now, maybe this'll point you in the right direction: "On a side note: Those abstract forms are no renders but simply Photoshop's Liquify- and Warp-tool used on a snapshot of good old fas[h]ioned grass..."

Hi. Was wondering if you've had a chance yet to upload anything tutorial-like describing the process you went through to create those abstract forms? I am just dying to know how you did that!!

I never got around to finish the tutorial for this, hope I'll find the time eventually to share the process...

I like the idea of how you're catering different sets of cards for different clients! I never thought of it that way. I always struggled with the idea too. I haven't yet done any branding for my own work, but I always did wonder, how to cater? Go with sleek business colours and risk alienating softer-themed industries (like food, arts, etc) or go more feminine colours, but lose male clients? It's always hair-raising. But this strategy kind of eliminates some of the struggle, since you can carefully cater at least the handouts to your client's business.

I like it!

Love this so much. This is exactly what I was thinking about for my own business card, but wasn't sure if it was too bold or something. Wow this totally convinced me that when it's done well it can go as bold as one want's it.

MadPotato In reply to Maxjia [2010-02-19 10:59:10 +0000 UTC]

I was really worrying about the same thing but I've only received positive feedback so far and -to be honest- I wanted a bold statement that expresses that I'm not your "average, everyday design guy" but someone who thinks out of the box.

Go for it

MadPotato In reply to Cyrus-Lee [2009-06-09 11:45:50 +0000 UTC]

Good input! I saw that ninja-star card a while back and was intrigued by the fold-out design but wanted to design something that stands out yet fits any wallet or card-holder - I might however design a special edition one day that utilizes some kind of fold-out technique.

Glad you like it, mate !

That's the reason why I just love Photoshop so much, you can almost use anything to come with something totally unexpected. (I should finally buy some Adobe-stock )

techgeekjd In reply to MadPotato [2009-06-09 17:10:37 +0000 UTC]

and you used only the liquify tool??

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MadPotato In reply to techgeekjd [2009-06-10 11:25:15 +0000 UTC]

The main shapes were created using the liquify tool on the photo of grass. I then cut out parts and further transformed them using the warp tool. The rest is some added shading using my WACOM and the blur-filter. The eyes and teeth of the "monsters" were added using the standard vector shape-tools.

I might actually write a tutorial on this as this seems like a technique worth sharing in more detail.

really nice cards mate, I myself am in the process of getting my first cards printed, these would look so hawt man, especially the vibrant color renders, and the off axis text is a great touch too

Glad you like 'em mate, that means a lot (thanks to all the other people's replies by the way )

So how's your business going, hope the jobs are rolling in? By the way: I'm pretty busy myself but I never forgot your little idea to collab on a grafitti-piece one day...

On a side note: Those abstract forms are no renders but simply Photoshop's Liquify- and Warp-tool used on a snapshot of good old fasioned grass...

serious wow lol, I knew i should have studied design, so as I knew what the hell I was doing sometimes

yea it's ok man, i am actually about to try and join a small studio where i live, cause i would prefer to work for small upcoming studio, rather than snobby stuck up busy busy crazy one, i want to change the ideas of how things are done here in west OZ ( our web is very poor ), but yea its all good, i am constantly trying new things ( see my gallery ), plus on great news front, our dream home is really looking incredible now, can't wait only few months to go, till we move in
