Description
Keeping track: maeix2.deviantart.com/art/96-A…

This was not an usual day.

That is…unless you expected to wake up
in a small damp cave by the sounds of the waves, horribly hungry, thirsty
beyond belief and having to spend the entire morning trying to do something
about that.

 He had not!

Thank goodness that was over at least.

Still, he wasn’t sure if this current situation was any
improvement. It somehow seemed a little…well, lacking.

Getting more in depth briefing on his new comrades, Petra, Kiara and her
horse had had to wait. It had been far more important getting something to eat
and drink. Thankfully he’d stumbled on to freshwater already, and there were
plenty of pools in the cave where the rainwater from last night had gathered.

At least it had been easy to dry out and get warm once the
sun came back up. This place, wherever it was, certainly wasn’t lacking in
light or heat. It was barely past morning and it was already sweltering hot.

“Are you sure this is a good idea?” Kiara watched anxiously.

Sam shrugged.

“Do you want to dig through the rock fall instead? The cave
extends further in but this route is quicker. It appears this entire section of
cliffs has an extensive cave system and I know I saw something flash in the sun
when down on the beach.”

Kiara didn’t answer. Did he have to sound like some
professor visiting from overseas?

They’d all already established that they should use the
caves as a sort of ‘home base’. It made sense and meant they didn’t have to
build something to shelter them from either wind, sand or sun.

They had, thankfully, found more than just the cave they’d
hidden in during the night…which was a bit too damp for anyone’s tastes and far
too exposed. That was good.

 Petra
was more worried about her horse than she seemed to be about herself. That kind
of made sense, but it wasn’t doing her any favours.

Going in from the outside wasn’t ideal, no matter what he
might say, but it was better than hauling rocks. It would have been better to
just being able to walk in though. Still, not everyone could have done this.

What did that mean? Had be been a mountain climber?

It wasn’t terribly deep so there was plenty of light to see
by. Even so, the place was mostly shadows.

So, where was it? There had been a glint, he was sure of it.
But now the sun had moved on and wasn’t shining straight into the cave anymore.
It must have been a nice spot though, before, as long as it wasn’t raining.

There! No, it was gone already. He turned his head first
this way then that, trying to catch it again.

 Instead he saw something else.

Something told him that they weren’t the castaways to have
ended up in this place. The skeletal parts scattered close to the far wall was
admittedly rather a bit of a clue there.

Sam knelt down, picking up one of the bones gingerly.
Brittle…not strange, if the sun was shining in here every morning. It was kind
of hard to tell how many there were, but he could see evidence of several
people. One. Two. Three.

Hmm…they looked like they’d been here for a while. He brushed
aside some dirt from what had brought him in the first place, shook it and held
it up to his ear.

Shaking his head, he gave the pocket watch another few
shakes. Not that is was likely to help. It needed more for it than he could
manage. Maybe a skilled clockmaker could fix it, but he didn’t seem to be one.
Guess that was one profession he could scratch of the list then.

Still, if that had been around when these people were alive,
they’d been here for quite some time. Maybe it had been an heirloom? That could
place them at anything from say five years and backwards. Not likely to be more
than a few hundred though, the watch wasn’t some 15th century piece
after all.

Didn’t look like they’d been living here, Sam thought. No
tools. No real marks on the walls. Nothing to indicate the place was habited.

Did that mean they’d been brought here on purpose? With the
bones from the skeletons so scattered and, by the looks of it, attacked by
small scavengers – there weren’t even ‘all’ bones here from what he could tell
– it was hard to tell, but the setting did suggest it.

So. Someone else had brought them here. Possibly, if it was
recently, they might still be around. That meant they might not be as alone on
this island as they had first thought.

That could be good. They’d get help quicker. Of course, if
no one had rescued ‘them’ by now they weren’t likely to come for the castaways
either.

On the other hand, it could be mightily bad…he didn’t fancy
getting into a fight with people that knew this place, especially if they
themselves didn’t have anywhere defensive to retreat to. He really hated
fighting battles where he didn’t know all the variables.

Wait a minute. Where did that come from? Did he used to
fight a lot of battles? Sam tried to remember but it was still like staring
into a blank wall painted black and blended into the shadows.

Sam managed to climb back out without too much of a hassle.
They might not be able to use the watch as it was right now but this little
excursion hadn’t been entirely without a haul in the ‘things’ department.

“Is that what I think it is?”

“Yes,” Sam nodded. “An antique maritime telescope. It’s a
little dirty but it appears to be fully functional. Just a bit of deposits to
clean up and it should be as good as new. This should help a lot.”

He held it up to his eyes, but the vision was blurry. Guess
they’d have to clean it first. Now they’d be able to see places without having
to come right up close to them. That had to be good, right?

The birds weren’t coming close enough here for them to get a
good look at, so it was hard to tell what they were. Some sort of seabird
surely, since they kept diving into the ocean for their lunch. So, that was a
good fishing spot. He’d had to remember that.

New Resources

A small antique maritime telescope (working)
waterlogged fancy pocketwatch (broken)
fishingspot (lacks tools to catch)
birds (possibly able to catch with stones)
Ferns (unknown if edible at this point)

This is fantastic, the art and the writing! I'm excited to see where everything is going

really? I'm getting better at humans (this is very good practice for odd poses) but the rest is seriously meh... The story turned out well though Glad I got a chance to use his skills so soon

So far we seem to be the only actual 'group'. Hope to get to see others joining up as well. I suspect catching something to eat will be next on the agenda.

Haha indeed! I may have Petra go find food as an extra, since no one seems to want to pick that choice on the chapter prompts (at least no one has so far)

Haha...I've already drawn an 'attack of the crabs' as an extra Just need to write the story for it before uploading. Not sure if the Crab or Sam wins that little tussle, it's a mighty big crab

It'd work well with each of them picking a spot to go foraging in. No idea how Petra is with throwing stones and hitting birds, but a small broken branch could do ok in fishing, or just looking at edible greens and berries.

Thanks. Had to rewrite it when stash 'lost' it But the second version came out better anyway  Did Kiara come across like she should have?  Well, certainly more colourful than usual

Yay, can't wait to see that. I'm enjoying this little adventure.

Oh, hate when that happens. You did really good with Kiara. She'd be the type of girl who would come across as a tough girl, but in a situation like this, that's all gone and she's kind of feeling vulnerable, especially being so young.  I'm thinking over what I am going to do with my next one and I still have to do an extra image when her parents hear about it. Not sure what route I'll take with that. I'm quite amused with this little story with the lost teenager on the shipwreck.

Me too. That'll teach me to type them out in word in the computer first...I forget I should do that when it hasn't misbehaved in a while

That's matches the kind of the impression I'd gotten of her, great Sam worries enough over who he might be but at least he has a good idea of what to do .

An extra image...or maybe just a sort of insert to what's happening to her? They'd bound to be worried about her. Maybe that would work, something where she thinks about their reaction?

I dont even type it into word but maybe I should start first. I mean I do have a file already with all the main info I could just put it there.Do you have any links to any sort of official refs for Sam and horse? Or if best descriptions? If I would draw them in I would want to do them well.Maybe I could draw like a double thing with like half with her parents hearing the news and the other half her thinking about them. Her parents are definitely going to want to do everything they can to try to find them. I am assuming maybe later on eventually it comes in on what loved ones of the survivors are doing. I'd be a little confused if we forgot them the entire time Maybe I could ask about that.

It helps. Wish I remembered that all the time, not just after it makes a mess of things. Oh well, I suppose I'll learn. It's a good idea - especially if you already have a file in there with the info anyway

Ash does have an official ref: maeix2.deviantart.com/art/Asky… . Sam doesn't have one, but you could use either the 'arrival' for the shipwreck (that's what I've been doing)  or this one: sta.sh/05jzxps3pr6

that sounds like a good plan, a sort of top and bottom...like a kind of mini comic, after a fashion. I'm sure we'll get to see that side of the matter eventually. I guess at the moment they're more worried about starving to death than they are about anything else really. The downside to not being able to eat grass Good idea to ask about though

Thank you for those links! They will be very helpful.

I think thats what I'm going to end up doing for my little extra image. I mean I guess people could attempt to eat grass... Wont go over to well Never hurts to ask, for all we know they may have not even thought of that.

mentioned she's wanting to do a food-gathering pic as well. And I've already completed one with Sam chasing crabs...well, crabs chasing Sam really, but who's counting, but haven't uploaded it yet.

So I figured that they've all gone off to forage what they can and bring it back to the caves. Will need to figure out something nifty to store water in as well

Grass definitely doesn't agree with the digestive system, though I suppose you could make grass soup if you were desperate...

Yea, getting food would be a really great idea. Essential after all. I don't hope they get desperate enough for grass soup.

It's like TV...they hardly ever need to eat (or lock their doors)  Nettle soup is quite tasty, but have no idea if they'd grow in this place. not exactly a grass mind you. They'd have to get something to cook it in as well... haven't seen any tarp around, but who knows what they might find when becoming beachcombers.

Hey if there were people shipwrecked there before them maybe they still had stuff left lying around somewhere too.

I wouldn't be surprised if we get to stumble over some of them. Maybe some of the mini-prompts. Ah, now there's an exciting thought.

Haha, that sounds good to me (Poor Sam!). Petra has one small water bottle but they'll need more than that even if they keep refilling it
