Description

"Something good? Something bad? A bit of both?"

Jonava Belstar by

First in a series, more to come soon! The players actually wanted some of their characters wearing clothes

Jo models the 'Casual Vandal' outfit from Bioware's 'Old Republic MMO game...

“Past the arms of the familiar
And their talk of better days
To the comfort of the strangers
Slipping out before they say… so long
Baby loves to run…

She counts out all her money
In the taxi on the way to meet her plane
Stares hopeful out the window
At the workers fighting through the pouring rain
She's searching through the stations
For an unfamiliar song
And she's thinking 'bout the places
That she knows she still belongs
She smiles the secret smile
That's sure she knows exactly how to carry on…”

Sheryl Crow; ‘Run Baby Run’

As the main protagonist of our 'Edge of Empire' game, Jo really has the Luke Skywalker role in many ways, just as Ardanna Cynn is the Han Solo figure.  But this isn't a 'Hero's Journey' kind of story - EoE is more about living life on the fringe, surviving and getting by.  Jo has no nemesis to vanquish, no skeletons in her closet or parents with respiratory issues.  She's not some Mary Sue, or important to the Force in any way.  Yes, she's still awesome and a talented, if undisciplined, Force adept.  But EoE is about making your own story, carving your own niche in a galaxy at war.  Even without some heavy destiny, you can make your own way in a world gone mad, fall in love and find yourself a purpose.  Jo loves being one of the Krayt Dragons; good-natured scoundrels who might rescue the princess AND steal the crown jewels in the process, before flying off to their next misadventure.

While Jo is sweet-natured, she doesn't see herself as a hero, and she's markedly wary of involving herself too deeply in the Galactic Civil War.  She's guardedly happy with the Krayt Dragon's involvement with the Systems Alliance - they are quite clearly the 'good guys' and she's comfortable with that.  The emergence of the Confederacy as a force (pun intended!) complicates matters for her considerably.  The Empire couldn't care less about self-taught Force adepts, but the Jedi ruthlessly enforce their will and send their Inquisitors to hunt down apostates, for fear of what they might bring forth with such undisciplined use of power.  Despite her love of independence, Jo has been forced to look to former Jedi for aid - Ben Kenobi of the Systems Alliance,  and Kaiya Adannon of the Followers of the Temple. While she doesn't want to be anyone's 'padawan', she might need to hone her powers to a keener edge to stay one step ahead of the Confederacy.

As a Force-sensitive Exile, Jo excels at staying 'under the radar', able to fog the minds of others and move subtly and unseen by quiet manipulation of the Force. “These aren’t the hot lesbians you‘re looking for!”

She has an eclectic grab-bag of talents, that give subtle boosts to her speed and senses, and allow her to remain independent and one step ahead of anyone who hunts her.   Jo doesn't use any kind of physical weapon, but she doesn't need to - her 'Move' power is incredibly potent, able to hurl about several starship-sized objects or creatures when she has enough 'juice'.  Her 'Sense' and 'Influence' powers are also potent, enabling her to detect things in her surroundings and directly manipulate the thoughts of other beings.

Jo is very smart (Intellect 4), and very, very charming (Presence 5). As a Civilian/Professional class character, Jo had an excellent university education in the Mid-Rim, and still has many contacts in academia, and a broad knowledge of most academic subjects.  A few years on the run has also taught her a little about the seedier side of the Outer Rim.  She also trained as a nurse, and can patch up her friends when they get hurt in battle, or give them a boost using stims. She took her degree in economics, and knows a great deal about stocks, shares and the complexities of galactic trade.  Even on the run, she can access money quickly, and she's found that throwing money at any problem tends to make it go away (and if it doesn't, throwing starships at the problem usually works!). She also has great skills at bartering and negotiating.

Her Signature Ability, Unmatched Expertise, literally makes everything she does much easier, reducing the difficulty of all her tasks, whether it's negotiating a deal or hurling multiple ATAT walkers with her mind.

In terms of personality, Jo is youthful, enthusiastic, upbeat, confident, witty and playful.  She never lets her inexperience get her down, and is happy for others - even allies - to underestimate her. She loves the freedom that life on the Fringe gives her, and enjoys her new career as a good-natured scoundrel and smuggler.  Jo is naturally kind and sweet-natured, and is a good influence on those around in her in this regard. She exults in the power her Force abilities gives her, but has very little understanding of the spiritual or metaphysical underpinnings of it.

“The telekinesis, and mind-reading…? I’ve always been able to do it, even as a kid…  They call it ‘The Force’…? I don’t think it cares what we call it… It’s just… there, right? An energy source.  Ben said it ‘surrounds and binds everything together’.  That works for me. It doesn’t have to be any more complicated than that.  I’m pretty certain it couldn’t care less about our religions or philosophies.”

She looks a lot like my character Reaper. She was kind of undead and things.
This lady Jo looks amazing, and I really expected a superhero with her design. But she is amazing

Casual Vandal eh... I do not remember encountering that one, probably didn't get far enough.

Heh, she has quite the direct view on what The Force is and means. Although I do think she's a tad unwise to not even carry a knife or sidearm pistol, those tend to be easy enough to use as a last resort, and it's always possible to run out of juice... then again, if she has a few points in unarmed combat, that works too.

I think Jo has a point in Melee, but she's never really been into weapons. She's a Civilian/Professional character, so she doesn't really get any weapon skills.  It tends to be a combat-lite system anyway, and in EoE, it's usually better to stay under the radar and not provoke fights... and she's ideally suited for that.

I haven't played TOR either, but one of the players does it extensively, and sent us a list of all the outfits available. Jo's outfit has always been 'black leather and midriff' so that one was ideal...

In our setting, 'the Force' is the most common explanation for all the fancy powers, because the Jedi and Sith are quite prevalent.  But lots of smaller groups exist - scientific types speak of 'biotics' and tribals talk about 'magic' or 'spirits'.  Self-taught types like Jo don't really have any understanding of the spiritual aspects, really. The Jedi think that makes people like her dangerous...

Mm, that's fair enough, I just feel like in the event you're trapped in a really bad situation and you're running out of mana, being able to smack or stab something isn't the worst idea in the world.

Funnily enough, there's one thing in her bag of tricks that's like a Vulcan nerve-pinch thing; it comes with her medical training in the Doctor skill tree. She only has Brawl 1 and Brawn 2, so she's never going to be a raging engine of destruction, but it lets her bypass armour and physical resistance, so she can kick someone in the privates and run away.

Also, she always has enough 'juice' to throw something small like a jawa or R2 droid; it's throwing multiple large things to far distances that she finds taxing.

“These aren’t the hot lesbians you‘re looking for!”
I imagine that backfiring a bit.  Not being the hot lesbians they are looking for just means they can push their luck without risking a conflict of interest.

Hahahaha! Luckily, stormtroopers aren't remotely interested in that!

It might not work as well on fringer thugs, agreed!

The stormtroopers are supposed to be ideological zealots, so it would make sense for them to be resistent to such things.

In our world, they're all clones, seemingly incapable of even the independent thoughts of most droids.  The Jedi and Empire both use them as disposable shock troops to die in their millions.

And yes, there's a story in there. Guri is essentially to the clones what BeeDee is to the droids; their saviour-figure. Unless the PCs end up turning her over to Savan, which is a distinct possibility...
