So here's the colossus I designed for the RIFT contest! Death is clearly the one that jumped out to me the most XD So I did the death plane
I honestly never enter contests. But when I saw the RIFT contest I just knew I had to do it :I I love RIFT and really enjoy the realistic yet fantasy take the art team took for the game. The graphics are just A-M-A-Z-I-N-G.
I love all the designs in RIFT so my challenge was to try and come up with something unique and original and also stay true to the style of RIFT. I kinda wanted my colossus to look like he belonged in the game.
So basically he's this mean colossus that is like a giant hive, home to thousands of undead wasps or something. So not only does the challenger have to beware of the giant monster, but fend off the swarms. And he has heads pushing through the skin on his back for some reason. Lost souls, perhaps.
It was really fun do! I love doodling monsters, but this is kind of the first one I've coloured and posted here on dA!

This is one of the few DA contests that's actually interesting. Most in the past were too vague in the subject matter/objective, or simply an overt attempt at advertising/product placement.
I'd say of the entries so far, the death-themed ones were the most interesting. Probably because death is a more abstract concept and fits better with macabre approach/stylization. As for other planes, I've probably lost count of how many rock/dirt/fire/tree golems I've seen so far on every page.

I definitely agree with you! I'll use your death colossus as an example too: As long as I can see the full body of the colossus, I think that's awesome. Backgrounds just add to the effect! But some seem to lose their colossus in a background. And this contest is all about the colossus! C:
Yes, I think death doesn't really have much of a form in life, the way rock and trees do. I have seen far more interesting death colossi than anything else.

Indeed, I believe that in concept art, being able to see the subject in question in its entirety (as much as possible) is pretty important. Of couse there's always going to be a modeling sheet for the modelers/animators to go off of, but one shouldn't have to guess what the rest of the creature's body looks like.
That and some people like to pose their colossus concepts at strange angles, making me wonder whether or not they look as intimidating when viewed at a dead on or at an isometric angle.

Judging by your gallery, I bet you'd create an amazing colossus out of clay. You'd you do the death plane? You have a lot of cool, creepy stuff!
