Description Andrewsarchus was a prehistoric, entelodontid carnivore that lived during the middle Eocene.
Based on a single top jaw bone found in 1923 in Mongolia, this animal has long predicted to have been the largest ever discovered terrestrial, mammalian carnivore; once believed to be a member of the group "Mesonychia", it has recently been discovered these animals were more closely related to the Entelodonts as well as early whale ancestors.
As an artiodactyl, Andrewsarchus was a very bizarre creature indeed, being like a wolf in sheep's clothing - a vicious carnivore, but with hooves; which has inspired many artist depictions of this animal to range from very wolf-like, to more pig-like (akin to the closely related entelodontids).
One of my favourite prehistoric animals, I tried to recreate this creature as a more entelodont-like creature; less wolf-like.
