Mordecai's personality between him and his alter-ego, Phantom Thief Joker, seems like two different people on the surface, but that is completely false as both sides of Mordecai retains several similarities in his true nature.

Mordecai as himself is calm, friendly, and pretty casual to nearly everyone around him with a few exceptions such as the strict higher ups, yet retains an air of professional businessman on the side as he works independently as a salesman to his friend's clothing apparels. He also shows a lot respect to strangers and keeps a fair distance both physically and emotionally until either you or he decide to approach first, although that wouldn't mean he would easily confine to you of his thoughts. He also tries not to get to close to his friends, even having to give them white lies to keep them off of his activities and deeper thoughts until he can find it in himself that you're someone he can trust. Because of this distrustful and secretive nature stemming from his childhood experiences, Mordecai simply does not have many close friends in his social bubble and sometimes would even leave them out on his general activities. He tends to be sassy and sometimes negatively calls out certain people's actions or words as he deems necessary with a grin, and has no qualms on disobeying orders that he feels are useless or obscure his goals.

As Phantom Thief Joker, Mordecai lets out an air of flamboyance that was veiled on his normal lifestyle, both in words and gestures, dramatic, a tad flirtatious with indirect interactions, and yet retains the gentleman tendencies that embodies typical gentleman thieves, but never without a wide grin. Yet, neither of his sides could ever hide the fact that deep down Mordecai is still rather hurt with the loss of his fellow phantom thief friends and his beloved rotom. Something he would never show to others, not even to his family, and kept it bottled up with a smile. He is still a thief deep down and will jump in the chance if given the right opportunity, for law or even the orders of higher up does not weigh him down. Most importantly of all, never expect him to be good of heart, for he is morally grey and may resort to actions that may seem a tad questionable to others; Mordecai believes in the ends justify the means after all.

Either way, Mordecai's loyalty, rare as it may be, only applies to his Phantom Thieves "family" and for others it must be hard-earned on the long run. He would never rat or sell them out, and will do his best to pull the strings to help his fellow members slip out of sticky situations, both on normal day to day basis or as Phantom Thieves at night. It is safe to say that you'll find him listening to his family more so than he does with his superiors, going more less by his own rules and not by the usual society customs.
