Description I think this was my favorite painting for the semester... I hope you all like it too I had some fun experimenting with the gold paint in this one, while working I found pearl-x gold pigment and decided to mix it into some linseed oil and see how it worked as a paint. I was quite happy with the results so you might see it pop up again.

cut paper, pen & ink, and oil on canvas board

12/31/08 note: the blue ink in this has actually begun to fade quite noticeably if you have any ideas why or of ways that i might fix it my ears are open, as of right now my only thought is to retrace the penwork with thinned oil paint and a careful brush. beware of blue higgins waterproof drawing ink.... its faded in both paintings that it was used in (scrollwork is the other)

I like the near symmetry, I never have patience for such detailed and elaborate artworks. I wish that I did though.

Yeah, I have a purple higgins that somehow got really thin (that might be my fault)

first of all, what surface did you paint on? did you put it on paper or the canvas board? if paper, what kind? It might be porous and the ink might have been overpowered by the paper. (I have no clue what is a good and not good paper, its just another angle to explore)

I would try another brand first if you really like blue ink - see if windsor and newton will work (despite the extra expense) - and if not, than if you want to fix that particular art work, you might have to try mixing the color in something more color-fast, such as acrylic.
You also might try (before it fades) sealing the dried ink with an acrylic gel medium (matte, so it doesnt shimmer) - if you have any, or get any - try a scrap piece first and give it time to 'fade' before you try it on something else. (if it doesnt work, there are plenty of other uses for gel medium, its worth having)

thanks for the suggestions Its painted on canvas board that was gessoed inked, gessoed again, inked... the top layer and the fine scroll work are the ones that are fading. I don't think porosity would make much of a difference, I've inked very absorbent rag paper without a problem before.
The only problem with trying to re-trace things with acrylic or sealing with gel medium is that there's a top glaze of oil on a lot of the work. Anywhere there is oil I can't touch with water based mediums anymore. This is why I'm thinking that my only option is to re-trace with oils and a brush. When I get a chance I should probably photograph the fading parts for comparison.
Oh the woes of mixed media x.x

yup. I understand that! Mixed media. I learned my lesson with trying to seal something with oil parts. >.<

yeah, oils throw quite the wrench into the mix.

but they're oh so yummy and irresistible o.o
