Uhm I never worked with those programs, but I googled it and you can make animated gif.'s with Gimp
I think it works the same way, it just looks a little different.

Hm, once you know how to make them it does not take that long, maybe a hour or so?....I am not sure, I never notice the time when making stuff >.<
