You frowned. He was looking in the mirror again. He wasn’t admiring himself. He wasn’t overly vain, but you wish that sometimes he would be. He would look at himself with excessively critical eyes that would judge and present his image to himself in a most unflattering light.

“You’re beautiful,” you reassured him. He’d never been ugly to you though others may have told him otherwise, but perhaps you were biased. This was the man that made your very heart race with a single glance, made your face light up in a blush at the mere thought of him. His response to your comment was the usual one. There were only two – a doubtful look or a comment relaying his skepticism. But he was beautiful. So beautiful. Not just his appearance either. He was a cocky bastard at times but in the best way that usually made you laugh. But he had a beautiful mind. He had a hyper-active imagination that created scenery and scenarios that were original and full of life and personality – much like him. Perhaps that’s why you loved him. Or maybe it was the way your heart swelled when he expressed any kind of affection towards you – platonic or otherwise.

You wrapped your arms around his waist in a hug, pressing the side of your face into his back and inhaling the scent that had become so familiar to you in the past month that the two of you had been together. Well, not entirely together. The two of you were with completely different people. But your long distance relationships made things… complicated in a way. You both found in each other the affection you couldn’t receive from your significant other. And you wanted him so badly. You had been happy in your relationship up until a month ago when the two of you spent a bold night with each other. You had only kissed, but that was enough. The friendship that had built up in the year you had known each other had bubbled over in an array of hidden emotion and feelings that had been long locked away. You knew that you loved him, yet denied vehemently for a long while. But you could no longer deny it. You were tired of your relationship and now found yourself only wanting him and wanting to be with him. So your heart ached.

He placed a hand over one of the ones that rested on his waist.

“I know. I love you too,” he said as you pressed a soft kiss to his back. Your heart fluttered at his words. Please love yourself.

“It really pisses me off when you even for a second believe what others say about you,” you muttered. You owed this much to him. He had given you your confidence back when your current relationship dragged your around by a leash made up of your own insecurities. He made you feel beautiful again after so long of shrinking back from mirrors with a lip curled in disgust. You were beautiful. And he was too.

You left a trail of butterfly kisses along his face once he turned to face you. He liked it though sometimes he wouldn’t admit it. He smiled. He would never know how much you adored that beautiful smile of his or his warm gaze or his gentle caresses or the sweet words he would say to you.

“Can’t we just run away together?” you asked with pleading eyes and a yearning heart. You had asked this question many times before.

“I wish it were that simple.” He would if he could, but you both owed it to your significant others to fill the roles you jumped into until the day you could call each other “lover” outside of your affairs.
