Description INTRODUCING!!!!!!!!

KYRA!!

Well, this is my newest character Kyra. She was originally a red panda, but long story short, I wanted a shark character, and she got switched. It worked and I love her. I have always wanted a character wish sharp teeth and now I have a thresher shark =^_^=

I personally think that this turned out really nice. It might have something to do with the new shading that I tried out. It is so much easier than my other way of shading and is really nice for simple pictures like this.

alight. Well, I have a program called Corel Painter 11. I never liked photoshop, but it is possible to shade like this. What I do is once I have all my flat colors finished, I find a color and shade that works well on the lightest shade. Usually it is a blue, purple or magenta, but sometimes I will use a red or orange, depending on the color scheme and light color. I. This case, I used a blue. Then I make a new layer and color it white. Color patters can interfere with forms, so I use a layer to cover them. Then I make a new layer and set it to multiply. This makes the color sort of see through and darker. Then I shade using a soft brush. (mine is an artist detail brush but a soft airbrush should work) then I shade the forms following a light source. Make sure to STUDY STUDY STUDY the forms and anatomy and such. It helps so much with shading. Then, once I hve all the shade in one color, I may change some for a different look. Like I didn't like how the blue looked on the red hair, so I changed it to red. I will also darken some areas when I want them to be darker and I will add a few more layers for such things. The trick is to know the forms and how certain things lay and how light interacts with things. And the biggest and best trick of all to make you a better artist....PRACTICE. You have to play around with things and find what suits you.
Anything else you want to know? Or is that novel enough? =^_^'=

dang! well, imma go get myself Corel Painter 11. yes, i have studied for many hours of many days, but i just cant find a technique to shade with. i can shade the correct spots, but then i cant find a way to make them look like shading. i tried making the opacity lighter, but then if i went over 1 spot of shading twice, it got all massed up and darker. one time i followed a tutorial on shading with lotsa layers and it worked out pretty well, but i ended up with 63 layers and it almost shut down my laptop. you can see it here: [link] but i forgot to erase the extra shading. it involved lotsa different colors and brushes and such and by the end, i just smudge-tooled all the shading together so it would blend. but what about my black and red character alcatraz? [link] sure its a headshot, but she has pretty complex markings and she is the one ive been having trouble with. do you have any suggestions?

Alright. Yea, I can see what you are saying. Well, i would try to play around with your program and see if you can find the 'multiply' setting. That is really how you get the effect. Other than that, all i would suggest is to try to get a feel for what your shading style is. And, I would try to stay away from so may layers. It makes the computer all laggy and is not good. And, as for Alcatraz, well, I am in the process of making a tutorial and That might help more. But, for now, I would try to look for that multiple setting. It will help miles.
