Description
In this world the conflict of the San Juan Islands between the United States and the British Empire escalates into a full blown war (after American soldiers shot a pig owned by a British farmer). Due to other factors such as increased sectionalism, the Confederate States secede a little earlier in 1860.

After the election for the next president in in 1860 goes to the Republican candidate, Abraham Lincoln, numerous states in the south secede and form the Confederate States of America, the war with Britain and the chaos allows Kentucky, the southern half of Missouri, and Kansas to join with the Confederacy. With bolstered numbers, and the US currently in open war with the British Empire, the Confederates forge an alliance with the British and France.

Attacked on two sides, the Union’s forces are eventually overwhelmed after a stunning series of victories by Confederate forces that see them march their forces into Washington DC and beyond.

From there, the temporary refuge capital of Philadelphia at the same time that the Royal Navy takes total control of the Eastern Seaboard and begins landing troops all along the Union coastline, ultimately forcing Congress to surrender.

The CSA is officially recognized as a separate state and the UK holds several referenda on several United States territories. Michigan is annexed as part of British Canada, while New England (Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, New York, Rhode Island, and Connecticut) is occupied by the British, officially becoming the Dominion of New England by 1880.

The United States due to losing so much land is forced to centralize their government, lick their wounds and attempt to recover. They never fully recover however were able to reach the pacific. California pledged loyalty to the Union still, for a time between 1865 and 1878 there would be a weird 'panhandle' of the US, that being California that blocked off the Confederates from the pacific.

The Confederates supported the French invasion of Mexico and were able to break off portions of Mexico for the basis of slavery. The territories of Chihuahua, Baja California were created, with Arizona being extended to include the remaining Mexican lands. Later on these areas would become Confederate states.

In 1878 the Union and Confederates erupted into a short war which culminated in the Confederates breaking off the northern half of California, the Confederates allowing the rest of California to be an independent neutral state, but the Confederates are allowed to use their ports for navy bases. The US lost minor lands to the Confederates.

The Spanish-Confederate War of 1898 resulted in the Confederates expanding into Cuba after winning the war. Cuba would provide a great climate for slavery and a lot of slave population was brought there for plantation farming. Many Confederate slave owners and citizens moved there and eventually outcompeted the native Hispanic population. Haiti was made a puppet state and was also used for slavery. Spain, was able to stabilize after this war and keep a hold of Puerto Rico and Dominica to this day.

The Union seethe in rage of being defeated a second time, and would so on join the Grand Alliance (Austria-Hungary, Germany, and the Ottomans), while the Confederates joined the coalition (France, Russia, and Britain). World War 1 would start in 1907 and last in 1914. It saw the destruction of the United States at the hands of the Confederates and the British, and the fall of the German, Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian Empires. Russia faced a brief rebellion but manage to quash it. WW1 would be missing aero planes and poison gas.

As per the treaty of Atlanta, the United States would be broken up. The Dominion of Cascadia (Washington, Oregon, and Idaho) was broken off as a British client state, while the Dominion of New England would gain New Jersey. What remained of the US was torn apart at the hands of the Confederates and made into various puppet states. While many would think the US would win due to manpower, lots of that manpower is missing in this timeline and the Confederates, and British allies surrounded the Union.

After WW1, due to international pressure the Confederates would abolish slavery, but would find themselves estranged from Britain and France and would gain an alliance with Russia, forming the Moscow-Richmond Understanding in 1928. Since then, the Confederates suppressed the power of the former US and were able to siphon off various resources from its territories in order to industrialize and keep the former Union down.

The alliance expanded and by 1939, the date the 'Silent War' would officially begin with the first hostilities showing between the Steel Ring, Coalition and Understanding. There would be proxy wars by the 1940s and 50s, with the Confederates recovering crashed alien technology. They shared this with the Russians but due to how clunky both nations were, the British and French launched into space first, with the Germans launching the first man into space in 1953.

The first Confederate man in space was in 1955, being the 3rd man into space. The Russians would put a man into space by the end of the year. The British and French had a joint manned mission to the moon in 1961 with a Russo-Confederate mission landing afterwards. Germans and their allies would reach the Moon by 1967, and there would be permanent interest, claims on the moon and small military bases on the moon as well as stations.

The Confederates would send the first probe to Mercury, the first probe sent to another planet and be able to land on it, while the French and British focused on Venus, and the Russians on Mars. The Germans would generally focus on all of them. The Confederates discovered a small asteroidal moon orbiting Mercury. The Russians would discover 2 smaller moons of Mars which were named after Peter the Great, and Tsar Nicholas II. The French and British would discover 6-8 small asteroidal moons of Venus and would name them accordingly.

Due to the stress of fighting the Silent War, the Confederates were force to centralize their government by 1971 and the former puppet states of the US were merged into the Heartland and Federal Republic of America, and allowed minor autonomy with minor Confederate oversight. These two states would prove unruly and Confederate troops were stationed in them at all times and used as proxies in the Silent War.

By the 1990s, the Confederates abolished the brutal apartheid system and blacks were allowed voting rights however many struggles would still continue. By the modern day, the CSA is fiercely conservative yet highly active in space. They are currently realizing they have to change in order to adapt to a struggling world, and various aspects have modernized and changed due to the Great recession from 2007-2010 which they are still reeling from.
