Description ***CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM WANTED***
Man, I miss the older version where you didn't need a subscription to request critique. XD

Started this last Friday and added the finishing touches today. I wanted to do a picture of a grasshopper because of all the cool details. So . . . yeah.

I used Prismacolor pencils, oil pastels, and pen for this. Oil pastels for the background, pen for the markings on the grasshopper, and Prismacolor pencils for the leaves and grasshopper. Overall I'd say it took about 10 hours. Strangely, the hardest part was the leaves. I just couldn't get the texture quite right or the shading. The grasshopper didn't take as long as I thought it would. It was by far the most fun part.

Well . . . I enjoyed drawing this, I hope you enjoy it too.

Nice choice of subject matter It could just be a matter of stylistic preference but I thought maybe if you added a bit more blue into the shading it might give it a bit more depth. But otherwise I like the amount of detail and work you have put into this, well done

Thank you! Yeah,I want to get shading with complementary colors down. I've tried it before with okay results. I know it can be done well. Thank you for the suggestion.

What i love most about the grasshopper is how your eyes kinda roll off all the details and down the the last spike on it's legs.
it kind of reminds me of a nature photograph that you'd see on ranger rick

CLYYYYYDE! How dare you show up?

JK lol.

Thank you! That part was the most fun part to do. The background could be better, but I focused on the grasshopper more .

I'm glad you said it looks like a nature photgraph, that's what I hoped for.

But...why did you choose a grasshopper?

I like its juxtaposition on society. They take leaps and bounds that we can't. They really represent something about us humans that I can't put my finger on. The juxtaposition overthrows the kingdoms of space and anarchy insues.

/BS. LOL

Wow, that's amazing! This is a fantastic piece, and it's all thanks to your attention to detail. Every little spot and little barbed hair is outstanding. And I really love the little splash of pink on its side. Never really associated pink with grasshoppers, but just that little bit makes it look great!

That said, I think the background is the weakest part. While colors are nice, I feel that it doesn't quite fit with the details of the rest of the piece. I'm not saying that everything should be in focus, especially if it's based off a photograph, but I feel that there are leaves being left out of the background, or something.

Love it! You did a fantastic job on this!

Thank you so much for your insightful comment! I agree there's something off about the background . . . it's a bit rushed. You have a point about the leaves.

Thanks again! I really appreciate your input!

No problem! And to be honest, I tend to have the same problem when it comes to leafy but blurry backgrounds. Never was good at that and I was called out on it all the time.

It's hard to portray depth with that kind of background. I feel your pain XD

The detail in the whole piece is awesome. I really like the composition. The colours and shading on the leaves and in the background works well against the grasshopper. I love the detail in that guy. The only thing I picked up on is that the black details on the grasshopper are mainly all the same shade/tone of black, maybe it needs more difference in that aspect, like darker and lighter shades of black/grey. That's being mega picky though, because I couldn't think of anything else to write some crit on. Really good job!

Thank you so much! I'm reallly glad you like the background. And I can see what ypu're saying about the black details, I was loking at it the other day and thought maybe I could have added some more varied tones. Thank you so much for the in-depth comment and the favorite!
